08/18/2021 Wednesday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Melody, Team T&D and Team R&B💕.

Team T&D hiked out to the point with Lesley on this very hot day. Their first find was RN58 Luana. Then they found little Puka RP30 in a little cove. Looks like he had just hauled out as they arrived.  Kami RL74 was up next looking quite beautiful in her shiny new coat.  Next there was PvKauai RW02.  Finally at the point they found they found was Squinty R330 and Kala RH76.  The south swell was bringing in some big waves to the point, looked almost like winter.  The waves were hitting squinty and waking him up. He also made sure to keep one eye on Kala and that she wasn't going anywhere.

Team R&B started their morning at the bay, they were having breakfast in the car when they spotted a

seal close to shore. It was an adult size looking like it wanted to haul in, but by the time Team R&B got out of the car the seal had moved farther out. They were able to get a few pics but not enough for an ID, just that is was an adult, red tags and slightly green.

Team R&B got a text from a friend of two seals on shore at tracks. They headed over and found Aukai RL12 who is about 35% molted. Lefty RG28 was next to her keeping tabs on her. They called the hotline and waited. They put out some sticks as people were getting a little too close.  They spent time educating the folks who had questions, and flagged down the folks who were getting too close.  Lefty got a little antsy and galumphed down the sand cliff to cool off, while Aukai stayed high up on shore. Team R&B left the site after awhile, hoping that a volunteer would eventually arrive.

Team R&B headed back to the bay as their last stop to check if little green kid showed up. There was nothing in the bay except two boats. They went for a walk and just by chance caught sight of some silvery green. And there he was RL20 Kalua snoozing on some rocks in the very high surf.  They watched him closely, especially his mouth area. It took some time and his moving around, but in their opinion they didn't see any line or hooks.  AND there is no sign of his molting, just a little green fat boy.

Melody got a text early this morning there was a seal in Waikiki. When she arrived she could tell right

away it was Kaiwi because she was so shiny and clean. She already had a zone set up around her and Melody was told she was there all night. Melody called the hotline to report, since as time went on the beach was getting busy.  People were stopping and asking questions and Melody was there to answer. Kaiwi moved down to the water's edge but about an hour later she headed back up the shore and buried her head in the sand.  Melody was hoping a volunteer would arrive before she had to leave, hopefully one eventually arrived.
