02/25/2021 Thursday Monk Seal Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Lesley, Marilyn, and Team R&B💕.  Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies. Also in todays news RK58 (Rocky's boy from 2018) was sent to Ke Kai Ola for treatment to wounds that were possibly inflicted by dog.  Good news he's in really good hands. (sorry I don't have the link to the news report)

Marilyn left work early for an appointment. On her way home she saw a seal at Sandys and didn't have time to stop, BUT after her appointment she went to check it out. There was an adult male by the lifeguard stand near the waterline. His tag G41 would make this Holokai RG40 looking all grown up. Marilyn took time to educate a number of folks about Holokai.

When Marilyn was heading back to her car she saw HMS signs closer to the outfall. She walked over

and there was an adult female seal without tags and a scar on her upper chest. Her lays Right Spot R016 and she is looking healthy.

Team R&B's morning started really slow, they wait two hours for a seals by tracks. They did see whales which passed the time. They left just before 10 and from another location they saw a seal haul up on shore right where they had been. They could see people were heading over to the seal so they went back. When they arrived there was RH32 Kaale and two men sitting right up with him. They asked the guys to give the seal some space. The guy responded by saying I don't have to back up any more, Team R&B explained the seals were endangered and protected by state and federal laws. The response was I'm not moving, I'm far enough. (between you and me this is the type of thing that makes my head spin, so disrespectful).  Team R&B called the hotline, and that is when they finally moved. To add insult to injury, one of the dudes said he knew John!  REALLY???

Luckily once there was room two more seals came in, Ka'ale, R407 Kawika agitated and barked at Kaale. The other critter was G28 Lefty and all three left the site headed to the black rocks.  Volunteers arrived and Team R&B filled them in and left for the day.

Team R&B headed over to another west side location  and were thrilled to find five seals. RH76 Kala and Kekoa RK72 were on left mid high rocks. RL70 Leina was to the right and R3CU was there. RW02 PvKauai was on lower rocks, sleeping then rolled into the playboy pond for the rest of his snooze. Next critter in was RH48 Lei Ola, and they were happy and surprised to see her.

Team R&B 💕 called it day. It was a successful but frustrating day!
