02/15/2021 Monday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn and Team R&B💕.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 11:50 to 1:30 and found four seals.  Conditions on the pier were windy along with a rain shower.  This made staying focused on the island a bit of a challenge.

First seal was in the inlet leading up to LPB, an unknown, subadult sized, brownish male belly and two tags. (UAM1). There were several rocks in the area that resemble seals (oh I know this well).

About 12:25 Marilyn suddenly became aware of a smaller seal behind UAM1. This was an unknown juvenile in size U/J had an older brownish coat, and a possible applied bleach on the right rear side (which would suggest N2), a yellowish belly and no visible tags. The UJ and UAM1 interacted some but major. At 1:26 Marilyn could no longer see the UJ, it's unclear if the UJ left or was just hiding behind the UAM1.

Close to the 1BS was a unknown, subadult to adult size, possible male with two tags and a lighter yellow belly. Because of the location and lighter belly Marilyn suspects the seal is the UF from yesterday.

Between the 3BS and SRI was another  subadult to adult male, with a darker gray male belly. Marilyn couldn't confirm if there were any tags.

The sooty terns are everywhere and Marilyn could hear them screeching in the sky above the pier. Hmmm maybe that's why there have been only a few critters on island, darn terns are too loud.

Team R&B💕 decided to start their morning at tracks. It didn't take long when they spotted a critter arriving. It was RH32 Ka'ale who seem to be in a hurry to haul up on shore. He was very alert and barked at the surfers who attempted to get their slippers.  Team R&B💕 advised them to just wait it out, but one guy tried and Ka'ale went for him and barked with his mouth wide open.  Surfer gave in and waited and Ka'ale finally settled.  Team R&B💕 called the hotline.

A second seal tried to come up on shore, but there were lots of people and the critter turned around and

took off. They were able to ID RN14 Kalani, he headed out to deeper water bellowing on his way out. Ka'ale answered back

Team R&B 💕 spotted Kalani RN14 coming back, this time he hauled up all the way up and stayed. Of course his bosom buddy rushed over to him and greeted him.  A volunteer had put out some signs.

Off to another west side location and Team R&B found one lone seal. Kala RH76 was up on the rocks by herself.

Team R&B went to check the bay and their only find today was R3CX Nalu. He was being visited by a couple of tourist taking some close up pictures.  Nalu was aware of their presence. The tourist finally moved on. Right after they left Nalu moved further up on the rocks to settle in.

Team R&B went back to check on RH76 Kala and discovered Kekoa Alii RK72 was with her on lower rocks.

Lastly Team R&B went back to tracks to check on the bosom buddies. There was a third seal, R407 Kawika on shore with them. There were no signs or volunteer at this time. There were lots of kids running around getting close to Kalani RN14.  Team R&B ended their day in frustration not being able to give the seals the room they need.
