02/14/2021 Sunday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn, Lesley and Team R&B 💕. Lesley's Ka'ena update from Saturday is part two of the dailies.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 11:30 to 1:30 and spotted two seals. She actually checked Rabbit Island yesterday and there were no seals, so she was happy to see at least two.
On the rock flats of LPB there was an Unknown Male (UM), juvenile to subadult size, darker male belly and two tags. He was originally low on the rock flats which made it hard to see him. He later moved up higher on the rock flats which provided a little better view.
At the waterline near the 1BS was an Unknown female (UF), juvenile to subadult size, light female belly and two tags. She changed position several times and moved slightly up the beach.
Besides the monk seals were two throw net fishermen that landed on the island beyond Rocky Right Beach in a blue kayaks. They came out of nowhere near the seals.

Team R&B 💕 were watching two seals in the outfall, bosom buddies Kaale RH32 and RN14 Kalani. Kaale left the area, and Team R&B 💕followed on shore, but then lost site of him. They went back to the outfall.  They kept looking for Kaale and from afar spotted a seal already on shore at tracks, so they hurried over.  There were two signs up really close to the seal.  The fishermen were the ones who put up the two signs (how cool is that).  Team R&B 💕 called the hotline and they were told to move the signs back.  Then they heard kids yelling "seal seal".  Now RN14 Kalani hauled up to join his bosom buddy Kaale.  Team R&B 💕 left the site at 10:15 for a meeting with a friend.

Team R&B 💕 checked out the bay and found RN44 had returned. He was on the rocks all alone.

At another westside location they found Kekoa Alii RK72 on lower rocks. RH76 Kala was near the water hole. And last but not least RL70 Leina was upper high rocks.

Team R&B 💕 went back to check on the critters at tracks. Now there
are four! There were three signs out but no one was paying attention to them.  A new volunteer was on site and
Team R&B 💕 explained what the old days were like when people were more respectful of the signs and zone set up for the seals. It gets a little scary these days with little kids running around so close to adult male seals interacting with each other.  RG28 Lefty and R407 Kawika had joined Kaale and Kalani.  Kaale and Kawika got into it with each other and people just walked by like they were a couple of puppies. Team R&B 💕 stayed for an hour and then left for the day.
