I forgot to mention something very important this past weekend. It was da Benny's 17th birthday on Friday the 30th. So Happy Birthday Benny Boy! You certainly have brought a lot of laughter into the monk seal ohana over the years !
Team Billand went out to KoOlina at 6:45 am to check on any critters. When they got to the site H92 was on shore. They called the Aloha Team and found out that someone had taken the signs from last night so, Team Billand waited for the Aloha Team come with some signs.
H92 seems restless, this behavior could be because she is due to molt soon. There were no signs of it starting yet.
Team Billand advised so many people who were going up to her, most were not aware she was there. Volunteer Karen arrived with two signs that helped. And finally security brought the signs and Team Billand posted them. The wooden signs aren't the easiest to sink into the sand, but at least it was something.
Team Billand headed out at 9 am, knowing volunteer Karen was going to stay watch.
Big news today at 12:44 Team Billand arrived at a west side location and found a seal on the mid rocks to the right alone, resting peacefully. This critter was very green, but they couldn't see his belly to see if it was molting. They waited for the critter to turn but he never did.
Team Billand did get his tags and with his green bean body, this for sure was Ka'ale RH32. He's been MIA lately and we were wondering when he returned if he would have a new coat. Guess not, but hopefully he will begin soon and we get to see his new un-green handsomeness!
Team Billand of course was thrilled to see him and looking healthy. In the past he disappears close to molt time, so we just have to wait and see. There were no signs of hooks or any stress, or new markings.
All the beaches were crazy crowded today, being a long holiday weekend. Beaches should be calmer with everyone back in school.
Marilyn was at the pier between 1:30 and 3:00 to view Rabbit Island. There was only one seal today during her observation.
UJ (unknown juvenile) was initially on the rocks flats on the Lanikai side of Left Point Beach. Marilyn couldn't determine if this was a yearling or an older seal. The critter had a new coat and two tags, and a good chance it was a female. Not much to go on so it was reported as a U/J
Posse pal Paul sent more video of Kolohe. This video is from today at Lanai Lookout. I guess this is where Kolohe likes to hang out. I will never get tired of watching the seals underwater.
Thank you Paul!
Happy 17th Birthday Benny!
