September 22, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Team T&D, Marilyn and posse pal Paul.

Team Billand got a late start (6:30 am) LOL.  They were heading out and decided to check the "construction area" and sure enough there was RH92 Nalani just hauling up to her new spot to snooze. She is alone, looking good in her new coat. Team Billand immediately left a message on the hotline.
The yellow tape that was flapping around yesterday was torn off, much to their relief.
They rechecked on her again closer to 10:30 and she was still there, no volunteers, The park was full of campers with lots of little kids, so Team Billand left to not draw attention to her.

At another west side location Team Billand found RG28 resting on the rocks, It appears he had just arrived, he is looking big, healthy and handsome.
They rechecked once more and he had moved more to the right, in between rocks, well hidden. They saw a group of people heading in their direction so they left the area to leave him undetected.

Today was Team T&D's last day of vacation so they decided to explore Oahu's north shore and was rewarded with seeing SIX seals today.
The first four was a group that has been hanging out together.  There was Holokai RG40, Squinty R330, Nanea RL44 and RK80 (Katy).  Nice find to start their day.

They continued their trek and came across a big male. Tammy was at a loss who this could be but got the tag shot N05, that would be Kainoa RN04!  This was quite a surprise, they had never seen him before, and I'm not sure if he's been in this neighborhood before.  Once again Team T&D are provided with a gift... and we all know who had a hand in that " ;-)

Team T&D stopped for a rest, when a hiker told them about a juvenile seal down the beach. They went looking and found RL36 Makoa resting peacefully tucked up in the rocks.

Marilyn did a check this morning of the south east side. She was fortunate to find a juvenile seal and she was able to ID RK24 by his K25 tag. He appears to almost be done with his molt and his overall condition seems good.

Marilyn checked Rabbit Island twice today, once this morning viewed from across Sea Life Park and then this afternoon from the pier.  The only critter was seen both times on the rock flats around SRI. The seal appears to be adult size with an older coat. Marilyn never saw the belly or tags. The seal was in the exact location as yesterday.

The question is where are all the weaners and juveniles? Have they found a hiding spot? Let's hope their all together keeping each other safe.

A text and an email from Posse Paul Hasley today brought video of Kolohe RW22.  Paul was diving when he saw our beloved Kolohe.   That was the good news.
Paul spotted a hooked spotted eagle ray. He originally thought it was feeding then he realized it was panicking with Paul's presence. It was at that point Paul realized it was hooked.  Paul tried to figured out how to help without getting hurt and allowing the ray to calm down.  The ray's barb is about four inches long.
The spotted eagle ray was free, but unfortunately still with hook.
