July 11, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Team T&D and Melody.

Over the last week or so the seals have been hiding from our posse. Sightings were low, but that all changed today. Team T&D (Tammy and Dave) had a seven seal day.  And Team Billand had a five seal day.  Even though Melody only had one critter, it was our infamous beauty Rocky.

Apparently Rocky decided to go visit Melody on her beach tonight, she arrived around 6 pm.  Melody got a call and was able to quickly ID her by her NB on her LFF.  She is looking quite plump and should be heading off to Kauai soon.  I believe she is due sometime around the very early August.
Security brought the signs out and Melody did some quick HMS 101. There was a new security personal so they were interested in knowing all about her. Melody called the hotline and left about 7:30 pm. Rocky was quite comfortable and will probably spend the night. Then again only Rocky knows.

Team Tammy and Dave went out to Ka'ena Point today and their first find was RN58 Luana and R333 at Camp Erdman. R333 tried to get close to Luana, but she was not having it.
Next was RH32 Ka'ale and RL20 at Birth Beach. Both were resting comfortable and peacefully. Ka'ale is looking greener than green.  They did not get a good look at his chest to see if he is starting his molt.

Then Team T&D found Ka'ena RO40 on the runway. While at the point they saw him come into the main pool, do a lap then off to the open ocean.
After that they spotted a seal swim into the main pool, then leave and check the entire point shoreline. Looking at many photos they spotted a cloudy eye and no tags and they ID'd Squinty R330.
Just as they were leaving they saw a shiny rock between the runway and main pool.
It took them about 10-15 minutes, they spotted 3 tags and got a shot while he was in the water. It was RW02 PvKauai.

Team Billand arrived at a west side beach at 7:20 am. There they found two seals on the rocks. RG28 was on lower rocks and Kekoa Alii RK72 was on high mid rocks to the left.
Team Billand had to leave to answer another call, but returned at 10:15 am. They found both seals now side by side on lower rocks. Waves got to them, washing them into each other, they hugged briefly, then more waves rolled them about. Kekoa entered the water, then RG28 and off they went by 11:30.  Team Billand watched as they went off fighting,
finally left the site by 12:30.

The call Team Billand responded to at 8 am was to Lagoon 2 where they found Pohaku RO28. There was a zone already up, and they made some minor adjustments. They called the hotline and stayed to educated people. A volunteer arrived at 9:30 and Team Billand left the site to return to west side.
Hopefully Pohaku will be heading over to Kauai this week as her due date is coming up very soon.

Team Billand did the Ka'ena West trek and found RL42 Leia in the same area she was in yesterday. She is still molting but looks like she is almost done. Nice to see her molt quickly she is looking so clean and shiny.

Last critter of the day for Team Billand came at 3:45 when they were leaving Ka'ena West. They spotted a seal on the rocks. It was RN14 Kalalni alone. They didn't stay as there were a lot of people around and didn't want to draw attention to him.
