July 10, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Melody and posse pal Vicki brought us an update from the north shore in the yesterday news department.

Yesterday's News: Posse Pal Vicki was on the north shore yesterday (Tuesday). Stopping off in Hauula she came across RB12 Sadie resting comfortably.  I guess this is Sadie's go to place when she's not on Rabbit Island.  She is looking good and had probably got herself a couple meals in her belly since she weaned PO4.

After hanging out with Sadie, Vicki went further and went to check on Weaner PO3. PO3 is looking like a typical weaner, and had some company. Holokai RG40 showed up to hang out with his UNCLE.  Yes that's right PO3 is Holokai's Uncle and this is why I love keeping track of who's who in the monk seal world.

Speaking of yesterday's NEWS I forgot to mention that it was Miss Lei Ola's 3rd Birthday. Happy Birthday sweet girl, and in a couple more years we'll be looking forward to your babies joining the family tree.

Team Billand was out at 6 am and were thrilled to find a seal at a westside location. Their first find today was RG28, who was resting on lower rocks. They ID'd him and then left to check other spots.

On their recheck of RG28 he was getting knocked around by waves. when he entered the water hole. The waves kept rolling him about and he finally left. They waited for him just in case he would return, and after twenty minutes later they seal a seal foraging doing 7 minute dives.
They wait and out pops a seal on high rocks, it's RG28. He had a hard time with the waves, trying to bear down on the rocks and stays. He looks healthy, not molting yet, no breaks in his coat.

Just past noon they did the Ka'ena West Trek and found one seal. There was RL42 Leia who is about 50% molted. She was uncomfortable and moving in the small water hole. Team Billand was happy to see her, she showed her belly which is nice and clean down to her ankle area. Other than that she is a mess and molting fast.
Looking at these photos one can understand why people call in a molting seal as dead, or rotting. They really look horrible if you don't understand what is happening to them.

Just after 2 pm Team Billand found Lei Ola RH48 had joined RG28. She was on lower rocks and he was still on high rocks behind her.  Team Billand happy to see she was away from the outfall, looking good and healthy.

While Team Billand  was out at Ka'ena West they got a call of a seal hauling out at Lagoon 4. They hurried out as fast as they could given the heat.
Upon arrival, they see a fat seal in a zone already in place by security.  They see the latest cookie wound is healing and are able to ID Pohaku RO28.  She is fat, resting on shore at the waters edge. Team Billand did a lot of talking to folks and educating them about this awesome female.  Team Billand did call the hotline.
Team Billand did their best to send messages to Pohaku that Kauai is waiting for her arrival, and she should head over soon... real soon.
At 4 pm volunteer arrived and Team Billand left for the day.

Melody was out and about today checking in at different areas. Her highlight of the day when she went to visit weaner PO3 and nephew Holokai was back to hang out with his uncle.  There was lots of action between the two of them. Melody not only send photos but also a video for us to enjoy. Thank you Melody!
