Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island with Diane today and there were 8 seals on island today.
On LPB were RB12 Sadie and PO4. They entered the water soon after they started viewing and hauled out to LPB again about 2:55 pm.
Between the 1BS and 2BS was an Unknown Juvenile: juvenile size, light gray (probably female belly) and two red tags.
Alone at Middle Cliff was PO3, who is apparently a weaner. RF34 Pua was with PO3 on Tuesday butshe appears to be gone now. PO3 never gave them a ventral view, so they weren't able to confirm the weaner's sex.
About 60 feet Makapuu side of 3BS was Adult Female 1: adult size, older coat with a brownish yellow female belly and two red tags.
Together closer to SRI were two seals: Adult Male and an Adult Female 2: The A/M was adult size, mottled gray male belly and unsure about tags. The seal may have a whitish pit scar on the left dorsal side about 1/3 forward from the rear flippers. The AF2 was adult size, grayish green female belly and two red tags.
Out on the rocks at the Lanikai side of RRB was a Juvenile Male: juvenile size, light cream-colored male belly and unsure about tags.
Melody went down to see Kaiwi RK96 and PO5. When she arrived they were just going into the water for their morning swim. After about 15 minutes people were looking around to see where they went. Even the DLNR jet ski patrol lost sight, they were checking the beaches.
Then about 2 1/2 hours later Mom and PO5 came zooming into birthbeach. They hung out in the shallows, mom wasn't finished with her water lesson. Finally they hauled out back to birth beach and had a snooze and most likely a feeding.
Melody and Gamma Gayle went for lunch. After they went back and Kaiwi and PO5 were at OCC beach, but they didn't stay there long. Kaiwi took PO5 back out for more swimming and then hauling out for another feeding and snooze. Melody and Gamma Gayle left for the day.
Team R&B only had one seal on the west side. It was early morning way up in the bushes snoozing was RH76 Kala. She looks pretty dry maybe was there all night.
Something that you don't see everyday. They spotted a bird in the water struggling in the rough surf. They spoke to the lifeguard who also was watching, thinking the shearwater might be in trouble.
Two surfers going out also saw the bird and one stopped grabbed the bird. The lifeguard called out to watch the big set coming in, and the surfer had to let go of the bird. Poor thing got tossed about.
The surfer got the bird put it in his shirt and brought it to shore to hand off to the lifeguard.
Team R&B took the bird wrapped in a warm towel and went to the vet. They don't handle birds, but they remembered at the boat harbor there was a sign. They called the hotline to report and took the bird home. Just over an hour, volunteer Cameron went to their house and took the bird. Hopefully there will be a happy ending.
