Marilyn did a brief view of Rabbit Island from 7:55 to 8:15 this morning. There were four seals during her time.
Alone near the 2BS was an U/J: juvenile size, light ventral, unsure of gender or tags. This "could" be N2 but she could not confirm without seeing any of the applied bleach.
Up in the dunes near the 2BS were three seals. All appeared to be subadult to adult size. She could not determine gender or tags for any of them.
Diane and I observed Rabbit Island today between 12:30 and 2:30 and had two seals on island. We werelooking for the little N2 seal but I don't think he was there during our observation. Both seals were reported as unknown, unidentified.
The first UU#1 was on the rocks on the shoreline by the 3BS. The seal was on its back showing its left side. The seal's coat was brownish and dry.
While checking the island I did see a small seal swimming about 100 yards out heading towards the island. About 20 or so minutes later Diane spotted a seal hauled out right in front of UU#1.
This is also an unknown unidentified critter with a grayish coat. It was laying on its belly with its right side facing us. We had absolutely nothing to work with.
Team T&D hiked Ka'ena point today. Their first find was RK36 Kauai Kolohe who was ID'd by Lesley. Its been a while since this boy has been in the neighborhood.
Next find was the result of a bright while belly shining like a flashlight. It turned out to be RL74 Kami.
The third critter they found was RO40 Ka'ena as they were leaving. He was in the rocks at a slant, and they realized they missed him on their way out.
Team T&Ds last find was a nice little surprise, there was a little untagged female with a cc bite. Theysat with her for a while. The bite did not seem to bother her at all. They waited until they got a flipper flex to make sure there were no tags. Other than the cookie wound there were no other markers. (After sharing we think this is the same little female that Team R&B saw briefly last week.
Team R&B was checking out an area over and over and hoping for a seal to arrive, but there weren't any. However they did enjoy the whales. Thar she blows a mom and calf, both of them breaching.
From a distance they looked over to another section and finally there was a seal hauled out. They drove over to find R407 Kawika. He is looking healthy and getting himself all sandy.
Team R&B got word of a seal hauled out, so they hurried over and were surprised to find three seals on shore. There were two signs up, so they added a couple more and educated the folks about the trio.
Today was a nice day in that everyone was respectful and interested in the seals.
On shore was the lovely Aukai RL12, being followed by Kekoa Alii RK72 and tagging along was Kaale RH32. Both Kekoa and Kaale wanted her attention and in the end after the two battled, Kekoa Alii got the girl. RH32 Kaale didn't leave, he just hung out and behaved himself.
All three remained by the corner rocks again. Barb made a seal sand sculpture for the kids to get close to. They stayed until 11:30 when Melody came to relieve them. Thank you Melody.
Team R&B arrived at another west side location and were happy to find on lower rocks RW02 PvKauai alone and enjoying a good snooze.
To the right was their little star. On the rocks but more visible was the handsome little guy from Kaulapapa, RP84 Pe'ekai. He had a crab crawl on his and a bee on his chest but remained undisturbed. He has a tiny bleach mark on his left side and a white digit on his left flipper. Absolutely perfect!
They also spotted an adult seal foraging, but the glaring sun made it hard to get an ID. They did see a large cookie scar on the back, but that was about it. They thought it could be RG28 but could not confirm.
