Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 12:50 to 2:30 and there were four seals on island today.
Alone on LPB was an Unknown Juvenile: larger juvenile size (probably a 2020 pup), light female belly and two tags. There might be a small nb on the seals lower left side. If so it could be RM26 Nohea but could not confirm.
About 40 feet Makapuu side of 3BS were three seals:
Subadult Female: subadult size, yellowish-brown female belly and two tags. There is also a small darker pigment area on the left side of the neck. She was initially by herself but moved closer to the following;
Adult Male: adult size, newer coat, medium gray male belly and two tags. He hauled out to RK37 at about 12:58 and they had a few words. They were close to each other for the rest of Marilyn's viewing session.
Team R&B were out today and on their first stop from a far they saw two seals. They were able to quickly ID R3CX Nalu. The second seal took a bit to figure out. It was a newly molted male and then they realized it was their boy RK72 Kekoa. He's back on the west side looking handsome. There is a very good possibility this is the molting male that Marilyn had been seeing on Rabbit Island.
At another west side location on mid high rock there was a seal on its side. It had a cookie scar on its rear area with a bleach and a shark bite scar on right upper chest. Based on these marking this is R3CU from Kauai. He is looking healthy no new wounds or hooks.
Team R&B were heading back to the car when they saw movement in the rocks. There was a small seal with no markers. They texted Melina, and they all studied the seal agreeing it was a young male. The seal was hit by some waves and they saw the tags P84 P85, not recognizing the numbers. After making a few calls they were told its a Kaulapapa male born in 2021, new to Oahu, Needless to say they were all thrilled to spot this cutie for the first time.
Later in the afternoon they got a frantic call of a seal hauled up on the beach and a family putting their baby near the seal. Team R&B rushed over and could see Auntie and security out there keeping the people back and scolding the couple for putting their baby in danger. They put the signs further back due to the rising surf and added ropes. With much appreciation, Posse pal Diane arrived to relieve an exhausted Team R&B.
The seal on shore was big boy RH32 Kaale resting in his spot. He is looking fat as usual, healthy and no hooks.
