September 12, 2024 Thursday's Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Team R&B and yours truly.

I got a text this morning of an Instagram photo of a seal on Kailua Beach. So off I went and it took me about 10 minutes to find the area, mostly because there is so much erosion along the shoreline.  But sure enough there were a group of folks gathered and I knew the seal was still there.  A volunteer was on site doing outreach and keeping people back.
I could see the seal was an adult female with an older greenish coat and no tags. Of course she was on her side facing the water so I didn't initial see her ventral side. Finally the rising tide washed over her and she rolled over, I could see the scar on her chest and her NB that is now green on her right side. It was Right Spot R016.
Once the wave washed over her she rolled and took off heading straight out more towards Lanikai
direction.  It felt good to be out on the beach checking out a seal so close to home. It's been a long time since one hauled out here.

Team R&B had a busy day today.  First they found Miss Kala RH76 alone at her zen spot, for now.
To her left was a big male on the rocks who they ID'd as RG32.  There were lots of folks out and about and then there were three more seals.
It was difficult to ID all of them, but patience and persistence paid off. First there was RH32 Kaale came in and galumphed over to Kala, but
he got excited and distracted because there were more seals arriving.
They saw that RG32 was with RL20 Kalua. Kaale fought with RG32 and RL20 but he ended up retreating and took off.
Then RG32 and Kalua went over to Kala and had some words. The three of them settled down and went to sleep.
Meanwhile out at the rest-camp area they saw two seals far off foraging in the water. There was a adult female with a clean coat with a another seal that had lots of green.

Next stop at the cliffs, they found two seals fighting and playing in
the water. They stayed and studied for an hour and finally got an ID on both seals. One was RP28, a 3 year old male and RM31 Kai. It took them a bit to make P28's ID, he's a little "rat", as RM31 tried to land many times but P28 kept biting his butt.

Team R&B went back to pokai to check on the seals. All were gone except for an adult male. They could not make a positive ID and aren't sure who he is.
