Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island today and was thrilled to to find an Adult Female (probably RF34 Pua) and her new pup PO3!!! They had a couple of seal visitors which seem to all work out fine.
The pup was active and Marilyn observed several nursing sessions. Mom and pup were in the middle cliff area. Pup was born sometime between yesterday after 2 pm and before today at 1 pm. Marilyn did not see any evidence of afterbirth but did see an area of sand that looked churned up, which is where the pup had been born. Marilyn reported the Mom and pup to the hotline.
There were three other seals playing in the water between the middle cliff and 3BS. Two of them an Adult Male and a Juvenile Female galumphed all the way from the 3BS to check out Mom and pup.
While watching Mom and pup, Marilyn was aware of one or more seals interacting in the water in front of the Mom and PO3. It turned out to be a group of three seals who later hauled out near the 3BS and then moved up into the dunes.
Juvenile Female: juvenile size, older coat with much green on the ventral side and two red tags.
Adult Male: adult size, lighter male belly and two red tags.
Team R&B started at paradise cove and when they got to the site there was one seal. It was RH32 Kaale up on the rocks alone and snoozing. There were lots of folks out and about so they called the hotline. Volunteer showed up.
From there they headed over to secrets where there were four seals. There were lots of people takingvideos and pictures. They called the hotline right away. There were three signs that Team R&B use up at the site.
There was RG28 Lefty, RL08 and R3CX Nalu getting into a squabble and it turned into a full blown fight. Lots of thrashing and splashing. Then they spotted RG32 come from top of the rocks and all four boys got into a big fight. Team R&B moved the signs higher up and asked folks to keep back.
Seals entered the water still fighting, and people wanted to pass to see the turtles. Team R&B tried to explain that the seals were unpredictable and best to keep back. Folks were less than pleased so they told them to go, hurry and don't stop.
Volunteer came took the signs put them lower. A woman came trying to make her way back just as RG32 was up on the reef making his way up higher. Volunteer ran to tell her to move quickly.
If that wasn't enough Team R&B headed over to lagoon 4 after hearing from a tourist there were two seals in the lagoon. When they got there they found RL12 Aukai and RN14 Kalani in a zone that had been set up by volunteer already there. A small kid ran into the zone near the seals and a good samaritan ran in to get the boy.
At another west side location they spotted one seal way off on the rocks. There on the right on waterfront rocks was the lovely RH76 Kala. She was getting slammed by the waves. She just stayed taking the hits and getting all wet. She is looking beautiful and healthy.
Last stop they spotted a really large seal on the rocks. When they went tot investigate there was R413 Makamae alone. She was somewhat alert, looking at the ocean now and then. She flipped over and that is when they confirmed her ID, not to mention she is huge.
