Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island for three hours today. She stayed longer since seals kept hauling out, there were a total of five seals by the time she packed up for the day.
When she first arrived there was only one seal present on the rock flats of LPB. Seal 1 - Adult Female: adult size, lighter female belly and at least one red tag. The seal rolled over for a while then entered the water about 12:20, making a dive with her flippers in the air.
At 12:17 Marilyn noticed Seal 2 had hauled out on the waterfront near the 3BS. Subadult Female: juvenile to subadult size, light female belly and two red tags.
Five minutes later Seal 3 hauled out near S2. Seal 3 - subadult to adult size, possibly female belly and unsure of tags.
At 1:01 spotted a newly hauled out Seal 4 about 60 feet from the 1BS. Seal 4 - Juvenile Female, with an old coat very green ventral side with two tags.
At 3:10 she saw Seal 5 hauled out near SRI. Seal 5 - adult size, unknown gender or tags.
Tammy went out to Ka'ena Point with Lesley today. Their first find was RL98 Lina at her favorite beach. When they got out to the point they found two seals. There was R330 Squinty and RL70 Leina, near each other. There was no interaction just resting. Just as they were about to leave she spotted movement to the left. There was R416, a young male looking very cute. Last but not least was Holokai RG40 came into the main pool. He swam around for a bit then hauled out on the island in the main pool.
Melody made her way to check on P01, and made plans to also stop to check in on Lei Ola and P02.
Well it seems PO1 is officially a weaner. She was swimming in the water when Melody arrived. She looks to be strong and handled the high surf like her momma taught her. She found some things to chew on, and after an hour she hauled out. She gradually made her way up the sand as the tide came in.
Then Melody checked in on Lei Ola RH48 and PO2. They were both sleeping soundly, and thereweren't many people around. Eventually mom and pup woke up. Mom decided to go across the rocks and PO2 had a little bit of a hard time but managed. They had a nursing session and the pup was getting wet from the high surf. Mom took the pup back up the sand were they had started. Good Mom!
Team R&B's first find was at the bay. They watched an adult seal foraging doing 7 minute dives. They thought it was Kala RH76. They got their confirmation when she hauled up on the rocks, it was Kala.
They headed over to paradise cove and there were 4 big seals on shore. Thankfully a volunteer was on site. Aukai RL12 was being bugged by RL08. He was being a pest and finally an annoyed Aukai barked at him.
RL08 moved and began to bug RK72 Kekoa Alii, who also barked at him.
The last seal was by the luau trees but eventually moved down to join the party. It was RH32 Kaale who lined up with the others. They all settled in and took a snooze.
They went to check yoks but the beaches are still closed. They could see a seal was out there and determined it was a male.
On their way home they made a stop at special place for them. They went down the beach and saw that whales were out for a show. They captured some amazing shots, I can only imagine what it was like to be there.
