11/11/2022 Friday's Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Marilyn and Team R&B💕

Before Marilyn went to the pier she checked the southeast side and was rewarded. She came across RK96 Kaiwi, which was nice to have her back,  Marilyn spent about 20 minutes hanging out with her. She was ID'd by her small nb on her forehead, her eroded K96 tag on left rear flipper, the natural bleach on her right rear flipper and her female belly. She is looking fairly rotund for this time of year. Perhaps she'll be having a pup in 2023. There were several fishermen in the area, but nobody was bothering her.

Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 12:50 to 2:20 and there were ultimately five seals.

In the middle of LPB was an Adult Female: adult size, old coat (ready to molt) female belly and possibly an upper chest scar, no tags. This might be R016 Right Spot who has been in the area recently.
Near each other down from the 1BS was RK24 and a Juvenile Female: the J/F was mostly hidden behind RK24. RK24 Bruno/Wawamalu/Bruno was ID'd by his subadult size, light male belly, tow red tags and scar on his right rear side.
J/F: may be weaner RQ44, but Marilyn just didn't see enough to confirm. Juvenile size, lighter female belly, but mostly covered in sand, unsure about tags.
Between Middle Cliffs was an Unknown Subadult: subadult size, newer coat, never saw the ventral side or rear flippers.
About 2:15 Marilyn became aware of a small seal behind the waterfront rocks not too far from the Unknown Subadult. Juvenile size, old coat, male belly, unknown tags.

Team R&B's first stop they didn't see any seals at the site, but they hung around for a bit. They noticed bubbles in a circle and it turned out to be a seal foraging along with two divers. They could see the seal was molting and they ID'd RH32 Kaale.
He landed looked and the went back in the water, swam 100 feet to his original spot from the past week. Hauled out again and stayed. Soon after three different guys walked right up in front of him. No wonder he leaves the area.
Team R&B called the hotline and waited for a bit. They decided to head out to check other sites. As they left they looked back and saw a guy with his dog. They went down the hill with his dog off leach and were just about 100 feet of Kaale. The guy was throwing a frisbee for the dog. The guy moved up the hill but the dog went towards Kaale. Suddenly the dog walked right up to Kaale and was sniffing at him and Kaale woke up and started barking. The owner heard the commotion and went back got a hold of his dog and put him on a leash.
Then the dude walked over to Kaale with his leashed dog, Kaale woke up again and the guy moved away.  Kaale is still molting and he stayed put.  The guy ended up moving up into the parking lot, took his dog off leash and played frisbee.

Next stop they found Kekoa Alii RK72 on shore alone. Then they found RN14 Kalani on the rocks. They spread the signs out and called the hotline. They waited for just about two hours for a volunteer. There were so many people, several weddings, one group was very loud with kids screaming and running into the SRA.
Kekoa got annoyed and left the shore and headed over to the rocks with Kalani. Even Kalani was annoyed and kept looking at the folks with the screaming kid.
Finally a volunteer arrived, took down the signs Team R&B put up and then proceeded to put up signs
they brought. They attempted to update the volunteer and then left the site.

Lastly they made the Ka'ena West trek and didn't find any seals. They did unfortunately did find a dead turtle.
After the hike on their way home they found Lefty RG28 on shore. Guess he moves between the west side to the north side of Ka'ena.
