I have to imagine everyone watching over her today is worried sick... I know I am. It's unclear exactly what is going on with her, if there is a wound that has been infected. Until a team can get to her SAFELY we really won't know. It is important to know that when the seals are in the water it is very difficult to capture them.... often times depending on the location ( such as this) it is unsafe for the seal and the team to be out there. We all just have to be patient and send our healing prayers and energy to this girl.
Ko'Olina Diane was out there today helping the Billands out too. Here is what she had to say:
Hi Donna,
Here are pictures of Makaiwi in the harbor. So sad to see her this way. She did venture around the harbor today and dodge a lot of boats going out of the harbor. One boat went right over her but she managed to escape that. Barbara got the shot of that one. My heart was beating so fast watching that and so didn't take the picture. I was relieved when I saw her come up again! Then she went by the boat ramp but got scared off by a guy trying to use the boat ramp. So she wondered around the harbor and then went back to where we first saw her yesterday.
She cried out many times when I was there monitoring her. I will be keeping you updated by photos as I do my daily monitoring each day of Makaiwi. Hope she can get help soon!

We are so very grateful to those Seal buds out there, HELPING WITH MONITORING MAKAIWI, the injured seal at KoOlina.
We need to keep at her where abouts, IN CASE SHE IS TIRED ENOUGH TO HAUL UP ON SHORE. THATS THE ONLY WAY, NOAA CAN HELP HER.
To you volunteers, GOD BLESS YOU.
Yesterday I was out at Ke'Ehi Lagoon early, for 5 hours I drove from one side to the other, walked beach parks in sun and rain, did outreach in several places. It's probably a good thing I didn't see the seal that was eating/playing with a dead fish the day before. Perhaps it means it realized that Ke'Ehi Lagoon is not a place to hang around. It's hard to describe the extremely bad, unpleasant, awful smell and foul odors due to the fish decomposition. All this due to the molasses spill ;(
