9-17-2013 DB's Dailies:Kea@AD, Duke&Aukai@RI, Luana&RK36@Mokuleia, Irma@Waikiki, Kekoa@RR, U'ilani@Keehi, RL42 Makua Cliffs, R5AY@Hauula, Makaiwi@KoOlina

Despite starting the Kea Quest at 0600 it would be 1123 before I finally laid eyes on him. Both Lesley and I on our respective shifts covered the estuary to Sandy Beach, multiple times but never spied the fat kid. Because he had been returning to AD around 1100 the last couple of days, I set up on the wall and waited, occasionally walking the AD beach. My last check had been at 1030. 1100 came and went and still no Kea. At 1123 I decided to check the AD spots again and lo and behold there he was draped across the rock he has been snoozin’ on the last few days. Where he came from I have no clue. I did the SPZ and he remains. Brandi reported that Kea entered the water at 1800.

At 1316 I found a 100% molted Duke (RA12) with Aukai (RL12), 60 ft left of 1BS, on Rabbit Island.

Kimo called at 0746, followed milliseconds later by Dana reporting (per Karen Turner) that Nihoa (R912) had weaned her pup. At 1004 Dana would call again to advise that Mom had returned, but this proven to be in error. At 1045 the new arrival was ID’d as RK36.

At 1020 Ocean Safety called with the report of an animal in Waikiki at 2E. Dana would confirm the ID as Irma (R010) at 1223. Posse member Christian called at 1400 to advise that Irma had departed and was swimming east. Thank you too to Danielle for being on it.

Team Billand called at 1103 with the report of Kekoa (RK72) at the Reef Runway. Kekoa has begun his molt.

At 1103 the Billands advised that Makaiwi (R4DF) was a her usual spot near the rocks at KoOlina. NOAA personnel were out there today, and noted that a lot of the white stuff on the back was no longer there, however they will remain on it, hoping for her to haul out so they can capture her.

At 1417 Team Billand found RL42 at Makua Cliffs.

At 1457 they reported Pohaku (RO28) at Waikomo’s.

Dana called at 1509 with the report of R5AY in Hauula.

Received word that U’ilani (RN36) had been observed twice in Keehi Lagoon and appeared happy and well.

Irma looking like a youngster... she feels quite comfortable when she's in Waikiki
