8/2/2016 DB's Dailies: Nani,Aukai,KalaCass&Sadie@Rabbit Island, RL42,RK36,RIP&Ka'ena@Ka'ena Point,

At 0800 I found what would prove to be Nani (RK60) at Rocky Right Beach, Rabbit Island. She would remain there all day.

Also at 0800 I found Aukai (RL12) in the Morning Glory 80 ft right of 3BS.

At 1009 Kala (RH76)(1009) hauled out of Seal Rock Inlet.

At 1214 Cass (RG06) hauled out left of Seal Rock Inlet. Kala would galumph over to join her. Cass has officially begun her molt. Her center chest area is 15% molted.

Aukai had entered the water earlier, and at 1330 hauled out to join Cass & Kala.

At 1220 a 50% molted Sadie hauled out left of 1BS on RI.

Tracy called in the morning to advise that she and Brenda were checking the Maunalua Bay spots, looking for Ka’iwi. They saw Gayle along the way, and nobody found nobody.

Team Billands covered some territory today. Finding nobody on the west side , Barbara did a Ka’ena Point trek. She reported a 1005 molted RL42 on the Waianae side KP trail, and a bit further along found RK36 . At the point she reported RIP (RR70) and Ka’ena (RO40) at separate locations. She check all animals for any evidence of a hind flipper arrow, or wound and saw no indications that these animals were involved.

Marilyn had an early medical appointment and did not do her usual Kawena check. I’ve heard nothing from AD, but saw cars, when I drove by, that would indicate that volunteers were at the site, so no doubt Kawena was hangin’ out as usual.

HMMA Update from August 1st

At 1138 a report came in about a seal on the Waianae side Kaena Point. The seal was believed to be an injured seal. The seal departed before Chrissy and Robyn arrived. At 1429 a report came in about Holokai (RG40) at Turtle Bay. ID was made by tags G40/G41. Karen checked in from Turtle Bay at 1600 with the same report. At 2015 a report was made from the National Hotline about a seal seen by a hiker at Kaena Point with a wound that appeared fresh. No visible bleeding was reported.

Anissa checked in via email from Kawena (RH32) site at 0638. It took Anissa approximately 30 minutes to find Kawena. Kawena was wedged in the rocks outside of the tide pool sleeping. Aside from an occasional flipper movement and rolling on her back, she stayed put the entire shift. Prior to the end of Anissa's shift Kawena moved into the water near the tide pool.

Anissa checked in again via email. She was dispatched by Jon at 1211 to MCBH Pyramid Rock. Anissa found Right Spot (R016) sleeping in the SPZ established by the lifeguards. There were several people on the beach. I fielded a lot questions from international military members who were excited to see Right Spot. Everyone was respectful. Todd from MBCH stopped by to check on things and advised that Right Spot had been there since approximately 0800 that morning. Right Spot departed at 1507.

Karen T. check in via email from Turtle Bay. Karen checked on Ua Maile (RT10) and pup (PO5) at 1400. They were swimming in the pool and playing in the waves at high tide. Karen left the pup site at 1500 to check on Holokai (RG40) near the tide pools. Holokai was sound asleep.

A Big Mahalo to all the volunteers who drove and walked countless miles in search of a seal of concern. The seal was sighted on the west side and was believed to have been shot with an arrow through the rear flipper. Many thanks to Sector Manager Chrissy and the west sector responders: Robyn, Terry, Bev, Debbie, Melina and Rick. Sorry If I missed any one!

8/1/2016 DB's Dailies: Kawena@AD, Sadie,Aukai,Nani,Cass&Kala@Rabbit Island, RIP@Maili, Ka'ale@Mokuleia

At 0812 arrived at Makai Pier to find a 20% molted Sadie (RB12) & Aukai (RL12) in the Morning Glory, 30 ft right of 3BS on Rabbit Island. They would be joined by little, green Cass (RG06) at 0948.

Also at 0812 I found what would prove to be Nani (RK60) to the right of Seal Rock Inlet.

On a pan at 1031 I found a newly arrived Kala (RH76) at Rocky Right Beach on RI.

Team Billand reported RIP (RR70) at Maili, at 1215

Diane G. mail brought shots from her stint today, in Mokuleia with Ka’ale (RH32).

1725 mail from Dr. Tom brought shots of Holokai (RG40) at Turtle Bay today.

KHON (Ch#2) is running a story, from NOAA, about a seal being reported last night in the Yoke’s area with a crossbow bolt (arrow) in a hind flipper. Now that KHON (and others) are talking about it I guess its okay to tell show the link. Hopefully, the power of Joe Moore can get the word out to the general public.

HMMA Update from 7/31/2016

The morning began at 0748 with a report about a seal hauled out at Maili Beach. Chrissy checked in with the Pohaku (RO28) ID. At 0839 a report came in about a seal at Three Tables. Malia responded but the seal had departed before she could make a positive ID. At 0842 a report came in about a seal hauled out at Alligator pond. Don responded and found Honey Girl (R5AY). At 0915 Marilyn found Kaiwi (RK96) at Kokee Flats. ID was made by tag K97 and natural bleach. This is the first known sighting of Kaiwi since she weaned her pup on 7/25/16. At 1200 an email report came in reporting Benny (RE74) at Alan Davis. Benny had an interaction with Kawena (RH36) in the tide pools then departed. Jeannie checked in at 1237 with a report of a seal at Ke Waena Beach. The seal was ID'ed as RK36 by tag 4DJ. Marilyn checked in at 1849 with a report of Benny (RE74) back at Alan Davis. Benny was swimming along the shore line but did not fully haul out.

Anissa checked in via email with updates from the Kawena (RH36) pup site. Anissa arrived at 0630 and Kawena stayed in her tide pool for majority of the shift. At approximately 0802, a large seal appeared west of the SPZ. The large seal appeared to be searching the shoreline. The seal eventually moved further west looking at the surf and shoreline, then it moved out to open water (most likely the unknown male was Benny but since a positive ID could not be made, this sighting will be an unknown). Kawena was completely unaware. At 1030 Kawena moved up on the rocks just outside her tide pool.

Lusi also check in via email with updates from the Turtle Bay pup site. Ua Maile (RT10) and pup (PO5) swam around almost the entire shift, when it began to rain mom and pup both hauled out for a little bit.
