07/04/2018 Monk Seal Dailies: Happy 4th of July

I hope you all had a safe and fun 4th of a July.!  I'll be including an old favorite photo taken by DB a few years back of RIP R70.

Today's dailies are from out usual die hard monk seal posse! Thank you all for being out there looking after the seals today. Team Billand, Lesley and Marilyn.  As usual Lesley's complete update is part two of the dailies.

Marilyn stopped by Sandy Beach today to check for any critters. She lucked out and found R1KT at the sewer outfall. A volunteer was on site and had set up 1KT was in the SRA.  He was ID'd by male, belly, tags T37 1KT). He has a partial CC scar on his left mid ventral side.

Next stop for Marilyn was to Makai Pier to view Rabbit Island. She spotted three HMS. Out on the left rock flats, she spotted the weaner PO6. It was difficulet to see because of the wave action in front of it. Around 1 pm, the weaner went into a pool in the rock flats and Marilyn did not see it again.

On the Left Point Beach about 50 feet left of the 1BS, she spotted a small, light colored belly HMS with 2 tags. Marilyn believes this to be RK39 Hali'a, but several photos suggest this was a young male, So......
On the rock flats next to Seal Rock Inlet was a subadult male with 2 tags. I think this seal had an applied bleach on the right shoulder but Marilyn wasn't able to read the number, so it will be reported as an UM.

Team Billand found Kaale at his usual all you can eat breakfast buffet. He had his adoring onlookers watching him eat what he could and avoid getting himself into trouble. I have to imagine there are some days that Team Billand must hold their breaths and just hope this little guy makes it through without getting hurt.
A few hours later they found him hauled out at a nearby beach resting. He was alone and very peaceful. Team Billand left so they wouldn't draw any attention to him.

Along their way they found Lei Ola RH48 hauled out on the rocks sound a sleep at a west side beach. With so many people out today, they only stayed a few minutes and left. No sense in bringing any attention that she is there. They found no other critters today.

Happy 4th !!!
