Tammy & Dave (Team T&D) went out to Ka'ena Point today. They found Ka'ena just hauling out into his pool. They also spotted an Aku'u (Black Crowned Night Heron) on the rocks watching. Probably watching for some fish.
While out at the point they also spotted an albatross on the rocks, and hoping to see it fledge. Even with the wind blowing all they got to see was some wing exercises.
Of course they stopped by the playpen and found the cousins snoozing peacefully together. It's so cute they have each other.
On the other side of the island Team Billand went to check on the early morning buffet. It was still dark and they could see a seal foraging off the beach, but could not make a positive ID.
They went and spent some time talking to the fishermen who keep an eye out for Ka'ale RH32. In the meantime they were able to ID the seal foraging off shore as Ka'ale RH32 and he was now busy tossing and ripping apart a large stickfish. They stayed for about four hours and Ka'ale finally hauled out on the rocks and fell asleep.
Team Billand made it out to Ka'ena West mid afternoon. They got to see two seals one was very green and the other was small and clean. Initially they thought the green seal to be RL42 Leia, until they realized it was a male :-) Turns out it was RN14 Kalani and the smaller seal was Lei Ola RH48. Her hook was visible from the left corner of her mouth.
While Team Billand were in the process of IDing the seals they noticed three people walking down to the seals. They were heading straight for them, both seals raised their heads and looked at them. Team Billand had to call out to them and wave them away. They did come over and chatted with Team Billand who was able to educate them, and they were apologetic. Team Billand stayed on for a little bit longer and hoped others would be respectful to the seals.
