Late night entry of volunteer Clay's pics. Clay had a busy day today, watching over Rocky, helping out with Kermit, and M+M. Team Billand sent Clays' photos late in the evening, and of course I had to make sure his efforts were shared. THANK YOU Clay.... we appreciate all you do. ~da blog lady~

And Clay gates ran into Sharkbite late in the evening at Ewa Beach also. How cool is that???? first meeting for Clay and T15M..too bad the sun went down...Thanks Clay...ya done good kid.
It would be far more proper to give our seals Hawaiian names to show that we as an organization recognize our seal as an endemic animal, and thereby furthering the cause (albeit in a small way) of keeping them from becoming extinct. Bessie?! Holy cow!
Karen, I agree that choosing Hawaiian names does send a message.
The name game doesn't have any "official" rules. It's basically comes down to what people call an animal. However, in this situation we have a very new family doing their best to look after RI37 who has been hauled out next to their property....
Personally.... I think sticking with tag numbers makes life a whole lot easier.
Hi Donna,
I'm certainly not an authority on the subject, but I've been told by several people that it's actually kapu for a non hawaiian to give a HMS a hawaiian name.
Pat from Maui
Good point, Pat,
What better way to bring the Hawaiian community into the monk seal plight- by having them actively participate in naming the seals! It worked for Ho'ailona.
This situation seems to come up again and again. How about having the organization institute "official rules"?
Yea we should rename Benny and Irma and Kermit?! Holy Sesame Street! Where are those Hawaiians that are watching Hawaiian Monk seals???? On Molokai???
Okay, this is why to me the name game isn't fun anymore.
1st... ANON I know we are all upset by what has happened on Molokai. But since we don't know who or what the circumstances are, a comment like that is totally inappropriate. PLUS no matter who did this, it's an individual or small group... DO NOT judge a group of people based on something you don't know.
2nd.... You're right, no one is going back to rename any seals and we have many many without Hawaiian names, and many with.... we have non hawaiians naming them and some hawaiians naming them. IN THE END it's just a NAME, which is only used by the people who refer to that animal.
I don't censor things on this blog, but I am not going to let this conversation go down the toilet either. If people want to share their thoughts about naming the seals fine, but I ask you to do with sensitivity to others.
THANK YOU... da blog lady.
