03/16/2021 Tuesday Monk Seal Dailies

Team R&B had a busy day today and still found time to send there updates.  Thank you, for your dedication Team !

Their first critter was Kaale RH32 foraging in the outfall. They couldn't stay so they don't know if he hauled out, but they did see a turtle grazing on limu on the rocks.

Next stop was at KoOlina where they found Miss R1KM in a lagoon snoozing. Initially it was all

peaceful until some kids decided to shoot her with their water guns. Team R&B went to talk with the kids and called the hotline. R1KM is huge and was agitated by the kids and other people getting too close.  Team R&B was told a volunteer was on their way.

At another westside location they found RN14 Kalani coming up on the rocks. RG28 Lefty was snoozing next to him.

They headed off to another location and found R3CU alone. He has a new wound that is healing on his chest area (looks like a bite). He seems fine, and although the wound is open it is healing. Good news that these critters have an amazing capacity to heal !  While hanging out with R3CU Team R&B found a bird with an injured left foot. They did some investigation and good posse they found out it's a Brent Goose from Alaska. They'll check on it again tomorrow.

Kolohe hauled out to 1BS, on Rabbit Island at 0713. He would remain there the rest of the day.

At 1200 Duke hauled out fronting 3BS . He too remained there all day.

The all day stays were a bit of a surprise because from 1245 until 1430 I had two people on Rabbit Island. The arrived via kayak, and hauled out just a few feet from Kolohe. They proceeded to explore the island tip to tip, passing all 3 of the No Landing signs twice, as well passing both the animals twice. Fortunately, there was no interaction. They were met by DOCARE Officer Maui upon their return to Kaupo Beach Park.

Team Billand reported RI37 once again at Guard Rail Beach, Maili. She stayed out on the reef most of the day, but Barbara called to say that she finally hauled out to the beach at 1515.

At 1552 Barbara called to report that they had found Benny just around the corner from RI37, at Maili Point.

At 0721 , from Makai Pier, I found Sadie snoozin' 30 ft left of 1BS, and Buster along with Duke, up in the grass behind Seal Rock Inlet, at the right end of the beach, on Rabbit Island. When I got back to Makai Pier at 0900, Buster had moved down to cool off. Duke would follow at 1013, and both would remain there the rest of the day. The was no interaction. 

Kolohe hauled out to join Sadie at 0908. He galumphed up to join her near the cliff, and both would snooze until 1034, when both began to stir, and Sadie initiated minor interaction. Both moved down together with Kolohe in the lead, and both remained near the water line for the remainder of the day with no further interaction.

Unfortunately, Team Billand provided the drama for the day. They reported RI37 at Guard Rail Beach , Maili. They reported and documented a severe , large, open, laceration wound on her posterior dorsal running to the right side, dorsal , posterior , just above her ankles. It appeared fresh, and though the cause is unknown, propellor wound would be high on my list of suspected causes. Of course, NOAA was called, but I have no further info at this writing. These animals can, and do, handle these types of wounds on their own. 2AW is proof of that.
