I was on the road early, as usual, but it took time for
the day to begin developing, but develop it did. At 0820 Dana called with the
report of an animal in Waikiki at tower 2E. At 1256 Karen Rohter confirmed the
Kermit (R012) ID. Confirming photos were received.
On my 1012 look at Rabbit Island I found Sadie (RB12)
and Duke (RA12). Duke's ventral wound still appears a bit bloody, probably from
galumphing around on rocks. The office has been advised.
At 1030 Kolohe (RW22) hauled out briefly on the far
left end of the beach on Rabbit Island. His stay was less than a minute. It's
impossible to say with any certainty that his behavior was odd, but had that
nagging feeling all day. When a fisherman posse member approached me at 1542 and
advised that he had seen a seal hooked by a fisherman near Blowhole, I began to
get a bad feeling. Of course, I can not confirm anything, but I'll most
certainly be paying attention tomorrow.
Lesley called at 1034 with the news that she had found
7GZ behind 380 Portlock Rd. She had gotten a call from a friend. When I arrived
at 1053 I also confirmed that it was T21M. He has barely begun his molt, on his
under jaw. He had last been seen just a couple of days ago at Iroquois Point
. He would depart at 1715.
At 1249 Buster (RV08) hauled out fronting 1BS onRI.
His D#16 molt is 70%.
Irma finally hauled out to the east end of Sandy Beach
at 1339. I cordoned her off, and she remained at dark.
Gayle called from Spitting Cave at 1420 to advise that
Kaiwi (RK96) was there. We had joked in the morning about being back there at
1430 for Kaiwi's arrival, since that seems to be the trend. We were a little
bit off.
Dana called at 1537 to advise of a report of an animal
in the trough at Magic Island. I have no other info.
Also at 1537 Dana advised tha Azlina had RI37 behind
her house again.
Donna checked in at 1553 to advise that her kayak
company contacts has reported a swimming juvenile animal around Flat Island. I
have no other info . Word was this smaller seal was feeding off the left side of flat island near the Kailua Beach boat ramp. It had a fish and was tossing and playing with it's food as usual.
ALSO ... another friend mentioned there was a seal on Sunday at MCBH, said NOAA folks were there, although I have a feeling it was either volunteers or the base wildlife folks.... Either way ANYONE know anything about this critter speak up.... inquiring minds want to know???
I've got photo problems tonight since I'm the wife's
computer, and have no way to down size the shots. I will have to be more
selective than usual on the shots. Ummmmm Where's Team Billands report? Was it a seal-less day for them?
Kaiwi RK96 @ Spitting Cave
Kermit @ Waikik ... really Kermit? molting on the Waikiki????
RI37/RI38 "Bessie"
T21M/7GZ @ port lock
Haaaa he's blowing a little nose bubble.

If you all will look back and remember, another Kermit molt, just about this time last year, same thing. Mom/Becky said ther was a molting seal in Waikiki. We all questioned, but guess who?..... Yep good ole Kermie. Ya gotta love these guys for being committed. Irma here he comes.
Who is the seal with the sand all over it?
Hi Anon....
The last four pictures are T21M.
The small picture of seal laying on the beach with sand is Irma R010.
And... There is one photo of RI37, and the other photos of seal on a sandy beach are Kermit.
BTW asking who is the seal with sand all over it? There's a few of them, but I hope this helps you out.
I think the seal you're referring to is the one at the top without the caption. If so, that would be Irma. If you right click on the photo you can usually find the name on the label of the picture.
