Tammy went out to Ka'ena Point today with Lesley. They had a good day, seeing seals, whales and albatross, not to mention the albatross chicks have begun to hatch. 

Their first seal was PvKauai RW02 on the rocks island. Near him on the coral was R330 Squinty.  At the runway was RL47 Kamakana.  Just when they thought it was going to be a boys day, they found two females down the way. There was Mohala RP24 and Luana RN58. 

The last seal they spotted today was R420 hauling out near RL47. Fun fact Kamakana and Mohala are both Rabbit Island seals!  Along with everything else they saw a mockingbird with nesting material. (hopefully I labeled all the seals correctly)

Team R&B searched the area and was coming up empty. But then their first find were whales out not that far. There were some kayaks in the area. A calf was active and Team R&B were loving it. They finally got to see some breaching!

Then they spotted multiple seals at electric beach. The first to be ID'd was RP28 Wakea. He took off about 1:00 pm. The second to be ID'd was their big boy RH32 Kaale. They continued to watch from afar, and ID'd a third seal. It was RN14 Kalani.

Lastly they spotted a few more seals at Kahe. At first there were three seals all resting on the rocks.

There was RG32 who was with R416 Makakii.  Left to them wasRL20 Kalani, he was on his own. Later on RS32 arrived and stayed to the right. They noted that RS32 might have a hook on her hind flipper.

01/30/2022 Sunday (part 2) Lesley's Weekly Ka'ena Update

There was a change in schedule this week due to some movie filming in the park.

On Monday I went down to check the beaches before crews arrived and had a VERY pleasant surprise. 
RK36 Kauai Kolohe had overnighted at our doorstep. Last I saw him was when he was about to start his molt last year, he'd spent several days here than when he started molting he left and hauled out at Turtle Bay. He went MIA till we got word he had been sighted on Maui in November.

He spent 4 nights and days here then left. He no longer has his tags so he can only be IDed by his scars.

RO40 Ka'ena  was out at the point on and off. He has been choosing other tide pools over HIS usual spots.

I saw RL98 Lina on Monday, then on Tuesday she was seen by Team Tammy and Dave with

a big fresh CC bite on her RFF shoulder. I monitored her all week. The wound is healing fast. She has lost her 206 tag so now she'll have a scar for IDing purposes. She's going to be 3 yrs old this year and had NO marks at all. She does also have a N34 bleach

RG28 Lefty joined RL98 Lina on Saturday - hope he gave her some advice about where to stay away from CCs ( - that's my human comment)

The first LAAL chicks have hatched, the fuzzy balls are adorable. The word is out about the pair of BFAL that nested and laid an egg at the beginning of the season. Unfortunately, the egg wasn't fertile. We monitored the parents and saw them taking turns on the nest every 2 weeks. 

We have had several others come to visit some banded and some not. This past week PRC team was able to band one!

The whales have taken over the show. I can definitely say, that it has been the best whale watching month of January in a very longtime.  The swells have been great, our driveway is full daily into the night with surfers and lots of surfing & other stories. It's always an eclectic group, age and races with surf as common love bringing them all together. Star gazing has also been out of this world. Lyman still thinks he will turn me one day into a navigator.

And in a blink the first month of the year is over.

06/29/2021 Tuesday (part 2) Lesley's Ka'ena Update

 Yesterday I went down to do a late afternoon check the fur kids.

RN58 Luana has finally started her molt, NO percentage yet just ruffled up fur and a couple of very small spots.

RP30 Puka was having a great time playing with toys.

This morning on D10 of her stay RN58 Luana was in company of RG28 Lefty - I checked couple of times thru out the day and nothing changed they just moved further near the waterline. Luana's molt hasn't changed much. Lefty could also be in a pre-molting mode

RP30 Puka was trying to rest in the back of Weaner Cove, in other checks he was hauled out. On the last one he played some and started to head to the water. Turned bellie up and went to sleep 

R407 Kawika has also spent over a week hauling out in the same spot. From downwind he smells strong, should be cracking anytime now

Last and very sighting was of R330 Squinty who has finally come back after a couple of months away.

I did a LAAL chick monitoring, they are adorable with their unique hairdos. We have a couple of fledging's already.   More soon - Be Safe
