News from Marilyn's Ka'ena Point visit on Saturday:

I hiked/rode the Ka'ena Point trail with a friend yesterday. The weather was warm and windy. I did encounter rain on the drive to KP, but not while in the KP park.

We saw seven HMS during our trip.

From near the parking lot looking toward the point, we could RV36 E'eno playing in one of the inlets. Apparently he had been in the inlet near the parking lot earlier, but probably decided to move away because of all the tents, people and music in the parking lot.

Within the NAR, R330 "Squinty" was snoozing among rocks and not showing us much, but I did see his male ventral with mid-ventral small nb. He was just moving into a channel when we returned to check on him on the way out.

RL47 "Kamakana" was out draped over a rock in the pools Mokuleia side of Ka'ena's pool. He is fairly green and we could see his newer CC bite, although he did not show us his rear flipper tags. He also entered the water due to the rising tide when we saw him on the hike out.

On the rocks in the middle of the main pool at the point was R420 Kaipo: older mottled coat with some green, male belly, superficial partial CC scar forward of his penial hole and a deeper scar on the right side of the penial hole. He gave us a fully sprawled male view.

There was a HMS swimming in one of the channels in the NAR that we believe was RL08 "BamBamSquarePants" based on the visible CC scars we could see. We saw him head in the "runway" direction, but never saw him hauled out.

We visited RL42 Leia and her pup PO12 twice during the day. Mom and pup seem to be doing fine. PO12 was able to follow mom when the latter moved up the beach. The pup still has part of its umbilical cord.

In Marilyn's own words:

I did Ka'ena Point with Diane and another friend on Saturday, 5/2/2026. Once again, the Wahiawa Run through us for a loop and we got turned around at Scofield Barracks and had to go through Wahiawa town to get to KP.

We were amazed at the amount of flood damage in the Waialua area and the "rivers" that had formed within KP hills.  The main road has been repaired, but none of the approved roads down to the shore are repaired. The KP gated road is still not open to the permittees because of the side road damage.

We saw eight seals while Diane and I were there. 

Our first seal was probably RN58 Luana near Day Star, but we were too far away to confirm the ID, but later confirmed  I'm not including a photo of her.

RL98 Lina and PO6 were in the nearshore waters at a KP beach. PO6 is very active and keeps mom on her toes. RL98 has her line bleach on her right side.

At the runway was RL47 Kamakana: adult size, male belly, L47 tag He was mostly high and dry due to the low tide.

Just outside the entrance to the main pool in the KP NAR was an Unknown Unknown (UU): it was low tide and the UU came near the entrance to the main pool but did not venture in. Then the UU wandered slowly in the direction to head to the west side. 

In the Camp Erdman area were three more seals:

RU04 Reef: juvenile size, very green, U04 tag. she never rolled over to show her female belly. She is RL98 Lina's 2025 pup.

Next was RP30 Puka: sub-adult size, male belly, P30 tag. He looks healthy. Not as green as the other two CE seals. He is RL42 Leia's 2021 pup 

Finally, we had RS32 U'i Mea Ola, small sub-adult size, a fair amount of green especially under her eyes, and S32 tag. He is RJ48 Kaimana's 2023 pup. She never showed her female belly.

January 18, 2026 Sunday's Dailies

In yesterday's news department Marilyn did the Ka'ena Point with a couple of friends. They only saw two seals but lots of action. 

There were several spats between the two seals. The participants turned out to be two seals born in 2019 less than two weeks apart.

The first seal was RL47 Kamakana born 5/20/2019 on Rabbit Island to mom Sadie RB12. His L47/L46  tags were visible. The other seal

involved in the spats was RL20 Kalua born 5/8/2019 to RN58 Luana at birth beach, Mokuleia.

Their first spat was close to shore. Then RL20 left the pool for a while and then cam back. Then RL47 left the main pool and came back. RL47 then settled on a rock nearer the outer part of the pool. Again RL20 came back and one of Marilyn's friends was able to get the photo of L20/21 tags. Both seals look to be in good health.

Today, Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 12:31 to 2:01 and there were three seals seen during that time. Near 3BS was Juvenile Unknown: juvenile size, older coat, two red tags, not sure of sex, but probably female. The JU moved down near the water line.

Between 3BS and SRI was an Adult Female: large adult size, older coat, sand-covered female belly, two red tags. This is probably the AF with the neck scar, but sand obscured the scar. The AF does look chunky.

Out on the RRB rock flats was a Sub-adult Unknown: sub-adult size, light gray ventral, no info on sex or tags.

Team R&B got a late start to today. Their first stop at pokai they found RM31 Kai already hauled up on

the rocks at seal inlet. He seemed on edge, looking around. Maybe there had been some folks around earlier bugging him, before they got there.

They only saw one seal foraging near the outfall area. They couldn't get an ID, so the seal was reported as an Unknown Adult.

Team R&B had been out for a long time looking and waiting. Then they spotted a big seal hauling up on shore at electric beach. The seal was large adult with a natural bleach ball on right side. They determined this was RN14 Kalani.  Most of the people around were

respectful and let him be.

Team R&B made their way to plains and were really surprised to find RL08. He has moved away from the west side, maybe he's heading for Rabbit Island.

From the back they could see where his cyst was. Team R&B thanked the life guards for putting up a zone for him.

September 7, 2025 Yesterday's News

Marilyn was out at Ka'ena Point on Saturday.  She sent this report from her amazing day: 

 

I did a Ka'ena Point trip with a friend yesterday. It was sunny with light winds and hot.

We saw seven HMS during the trek.

At the beach in front of Camp Erdman were two seals:

RN58 Luana: adult female, new coat, medium gray female belly, scar on upper chest, two tags that I could not read.

Nearby was what I think was RG40 Holokai: adult size, very old coat probably ready to molt, male belly, a chipped tag and nb on rear flipper.

At the Ponds we saw all three weaners. Initially we saw RU40 and RU56 playing in the water. Then RU40 Wai hauled out in a small cove and played with his head buried in the sand and slapping the sand. Then he moved up a way and went into a snooze mood. He was ID'd by weaner size, shape and coloration and U41 tag.

RU56 Lehua swam around for a while and then disappeared. She was ID'd by her weaner size, shape and coloration, and her applied N56 bleach. When we hiked out later, RU56 had hauled out with RU40, but

we did go close because we did not to disclose their location to people nearby.

We then found RU04 Reef in another location where she was mostly hidden. She was ID'd by her weaner size and shape, her U04 tag and the small nb on her neck. When we hiked out later, she had relocated but was still at the Ponds.

At Ka'ena Point we found R420 Kaipo: sub-adult to adult size, tan male belly with a fair amount of green, a partial C-scar mid-ventral, no tags.

Then we saw the five Bristle-thighed Curlew who have been seen recently in the "runway" area.

At 11:07 am, RG28 Lefty hauled out in a channel on the Kauai side of the main pool. He has an old coat with a lots of green, particularly around his eyes, at least one tag, small pit scars on the dorsal and a nb on his LFF. He hauled out further and went into snooze mode.
