May 19, 2023 Friday's Late Dailies (part 1)

Melody went down to check on RK96 Kaiwi and PO5 Pualani in the morning. In her words she said it has become pretty interesting at the site especially with RK24 Wawamalu/Bruno coming around.  For the most part it seems everyone was getting along. Mama Kaiwi barks at him every once in a while, and she also barks at PO5. 

When Melody arrived they were all high up on the sand at the Natatorium end of the beach. There was

a nursing session and RK24 was snoozing. When Pualani PO5 finished nursing she was ready for play. She got up next to mom and found a stick to play with. That lasted while until they kid started playing with Mom, rolling around and flipper waving to her adoring fans.  

Mama Kaiwi was ready and they moved down to the water, RK24 followed them out. They swam past the Natatorium being the furthest the trio have been swimming together. At one point, Kaiwi and RK24 tussled in the water, but it didn't last long. They weren't out that long, and slowly made their way back in.  They rested up on the sand for a while and PO5 Pualani haad a snack and they went back into the water. They only stayed in the shallows for about 20 minutes and the hauled out and went into snooze mode. Melody called it a day.

Tammy had the most wonderful day, in that not only did she get to enjoy one Mom & pup, but she got to enjoy two moms and pups.

Somewhere over the rainbow there were two pots of gold. The first discovery was RL42 Leia and PO6. Then if that wasn't enough on her way she discovered another mom and pup, RN58 and her pup PO7.

Team R&B was dealing with crazy downpours for two hours on the west side. They waited it out and finally they got a break in the weather. To their delight they found RH48 Lei Ola. She is looking very green these days.

Next stop they spotted a seal that was resting. When it moved they noticed a mark on its head. Before they could determine what the mark was or other identifying marks the seal took a dip.  To they waited, and waited and of course it rained again.

They were lucky to see the seal galumphing back up, that is when they ID'd RN14 Kalani. It was hard to see in the rain but he definitely has some new wounds on the right side of his head.

02/26/2020 (PART 3) Lesley's Weekly+ Ka'ena Update

 

Aloha all,   

The past 2 weeks have been extremely busy with many non-planned events throwing aside my plans to get my reports for the blog back to daily.

Our cast of seals have been:

RL74 Kami, RL98 Lina, R3CU came by for 2 days (!), RJ40 'E'ena, R303 BG, RN58 Luana, RO40 Ka'ena and special guests and longtime no show RG40 Holokai and RH48 Lei Ola

.Needless to repeat that this whale season has been spectacular, with breaches, tails slaps, pectoral slaps and several competition pods. The calves are so fun to watch. Once they start breaching, they don't stop. Our friend Lorin used to call them "Gherkins" (small pickle). I adopted the nickname and make visitors laugh everytime I say it.

Unfortunately this "El Nina" year has been  bad for or LAAL chicks. We lost many to the heat, some were lost during hatching, parents have to go further north to get food, chicks have been left alone for longer periods at vey young age. But the ones we have are fighters and are looking healthy and growing fast.

The BFAL have been seen daily, but mostly fluing around now. This week the frequent visitor was "our" male V541.  More soon - Be Safe
