10/25/2022 Tuesday's Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Melody, Team T&D and Team R&B💕

Team T&D are on the big island, and met up with some friends. They headed for the beach and found RA20.  RA20 is R5AY aka Honey Girl's fourth known offspring. RA20 was born in 2009 on Kauai.

Melody got a text on Monday evening that Rocky was in Waikiki. So she headed down early morning and sure enough she was still there. Lots of people around including a volunteer.
Apparently Rocky displaced another beachgoer last night. The poor woman had to leave her belongings on the beach overnight since Rocky decided to rest her head on her tote bag.  When Melody got there this morning Rocky was still too close to retrieve the woman's belongings, it wasn't until 10:45 when the volunteer could get the woman's bag.  I think we can all agree Rocky really commands the beach these days.

Team R&B got a call of a single seal on shore. By the time they made it out someone had put up some signs. Team R&B called the hotline to let them know RL12 Aukai was the seal.  She was in snooze mode in the warm sun. In spite of it being a busy beach, people were good today, well at least while Team R&B were there.  Interesting fact about Aukai, when she was nine months old, she was shot in the head with a spear. Thankfully our mentor DB saw the spear, reported to NOAA and they were able to remove the spear. Thank you NOAA and of course our beloved DB.

At another west side location they found RL20 Kalua. He was snoozing in a hole and eventually came
out long enough for Team R&B get a good look at him. He's 100% done with his molt, looking good.
At the same location but different spot, Team R&B got a glimpse of a seal.  It at waterfront rocks in a hole way out. It took them quite awhile to get the ID, but finally they were able to see it was RH76 Kala. They were surprised she fit in the hole, and wondered why she chose to hide that far away.

Lastly they spent some time watching the dolphins who were so active today. They really put on a show today with all kinds of behavior.

09/28/2021 Tuesday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team T&D, Dana Jones, and Team R&B💕.  Dana from HMSPO, (Hawaiian Monk Seal Preservation Ohana) did a write up on KE18's return to Oahu, please see part two of the dailies.

Team T&D went to check the beaches first thing this morning. They're still getting some R&R on the Big Island which included four seals today.  They first saw RA20 in the same resting spot as yesterday.  Then they found Miss Waimanu RW34, who has to be one of the largest monk seals. No she is not pregnant just a big big girl. Dave thinks she's probably a good 800 pounds. (don't want her rolling over on your toes).  They also found R8HE who is almost done with her molt, looking pretty. Lastly there was RB00, who in my opinion is looking like a large marge. Team T&D didn't say anything about her size, but she's looking big.  We should note Team T&D has seen eight of the nine seals that reside there, one more to go.

Team R&B had a very late start today. During the afternoon they went to the bay and found RL20

Kalua. He was oceanside foraging and stealing fish.

At another west side spot they saw a little green seal snoozing in the rocks. They watched and studied and finally saw his tag and N4 applied bleach. There was little RM31 Kai once again managing on his own.

On their way to Ka'ena West they spotted a seal at yoks. On shore was Lefty RG28 snoozing peacefully on shore.

09/27/2021 Monday Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Lesley, Team T&D and Team R&B💕.  Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies. ALSO here is a link to the official DLNR story regarding KG54 long journey.   https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/blog/2021/09/27/nr21-170/

Team T&D are still on the Big Island having a great time. They saw six of the known nine seals that reside there.  They found three "kids" Manu'iwa RK26, female, RA20's 2018 pup. Kaulana RL50, male, RA20's 2019 pup. They also saw PH1 male Big Island's only 2020 pup.

While Tammy was photographing the three kids, Dave went walking. Soon enough he was signaling to Tammy there was a seal. They came across R408 and their first time they have met her.

Lastly Team T&D came across R8HE who is still molting. But the best part was finding RA20 on the

beach. She is the mother of RL26 and RL50.

Back on Oahu Team R&B spent a few hours observing seals at the outfall. There were lots of fishers out today, one of them lucky enough to catch a rainbow runner. One of the seals was Lefty RG28 who went all over the outfall and beyond. They never saw him land all the time they were there. There was another seal and it took them forever to make an ID. Finally they figured out it was RN14 Kalani, he was foraging with RG28 Lefty.

Team R&B went over to Kahe where there are lots of dogs ready to charge. They had a close call with one of them.  They made it pass and went over to the rocks and found Kaale RH32.

At another west side location they were happy to find RL70 on the rocks. She was snoozing and putting her head in the water. She is looking to be in good condition, nice and plump.  They noticed she has a scar under her chin.

Checking out the bay they were delighted to find RL20 snoozing on the rocks in peace. There was no one around to bug him while they were there.  Man this kid is green, it will be nice to see him molt.  To add to their happiness they viewed a pod of dolphins passing by.
