Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island from 1:30 to 3:22 om and there where just the moms and pups seen during that time.

Kala RH76 and PO8 started out where they have been the past two days. PO8 was hidden behind Kala for much of the early part of Marilyn's viewing session. Then the pup crawled up the shore and played with a stick for 10-15 minutes. Then at 2:43 pm, RH76 Kala entered the water and the pup soon followed. The pup seemed unhappy in the water and about 2:56 pm, the pup hauled out on the waterfront rocks and mom followed and they both moved up the beach. Then PO8 started playing with another small branch. PO8 is three weeks old today.

RL12 Aukai and her adopted pup PO3 were on the beach between 3BS and SRI. They started out separated from each other, but later they were near each other. Both Aukai and PO3 seem to be doing well.

The Masked Booby chick is getting larger and its winds are growing. Today one of the parents was with the chick.

Just as Marilyn was getting ready to leave, three kayakers landed on the island between 1BS and RH76. Marilyn submitted a report to the DLNR tip line and will follow up with photos. They did not go near either of the moms and pups, BUT- they shouldn't be landed on Rabbit Island at all.

Team R&B's first stop at a west side beach they found a big male seal. He was at the seal inlet and they discovered it was Nalu R3CX. He was alone and enjoying his peace and quiet.

Next they headed over to the outfall and found RL20 Kalua steaking fish from the fishers. One fisher said he stole five fish from him, that *&%#er.

Later they saw two people swimming in the outfall, which is not a safe place to be swimming.

They noticed RL20 seems to have a small hook or nick from a hook on his left side.

Needless to say Team R&B love watching the dolphins. Today was no exception watching their acrobatic abilities. 

They were checking a number of beaches coming up empty. Then at one point they turned and spotted two seals way down on Nimitz beach. They drove over and found RH48 Lei Ola and RH32 Kaale.  These two would make some cute pups!  There were some folks in area and were respectful.

July 4, 2023 Tuesday's Dailies

Hope you all had a good and safe fourth of July!  Todays dailies are brought to you by Team R&B💕  Marilyn did view Rabbit Island but had so many photos to sort through, we'll get a report tomorrow.

Team R&B started early morning at the bay. They found RM31 Kai resting and doing just fine until some people came by. He managed to ignore them and stayed despite their ignorance.

Then they spotted Nalu R3CX swimming and another seal he is chasing turned out to be Lei Ola RH48.

They looked Nalu over carefully and didn't see any lines, no hook visible. Hopefully he tossed it all. He was after Lei Ola.  There were two women on their surf board following the seals taking a video.

Seals hurried away, Lei Ola landed and of course Nalu followed her up on the rocks.. They were able to get a better look at his mouth, and they did not see any fishing gear. The two of them landed.

Still at the bay they saw Kala RH76 foraging off the rocks for the longest time, until she finally landed to the right. Then some people came around and got close to Kala. One girl walked right up to her when the DLNR show up and witnessed the girls on the rocks by the seals. He called out to the kis and walked the girl to her mom and dad.

Then a boy came alone, got a rock and started barking like a sea lion.

Kala was annoyed, Team R&B called out to the boy who dropped the rock.  Honestly what are these people thinking????

Team R&B had been out from 7:30 to after 1 pm, watching in fear that someone would do something stupid and they did. They were soooooo grateful to the DLNR for being out there today!

Todays dailies are brought to you by Team R&B💕.   There was a post on facebook from the DLNR regarding an event of dolphin carcasses on Oahu's shoreline. Here is the post:

TRIO OF FRASER’S DOLPHIN CARCASSES ON O‘AHU COASTLINE PROMPT CAUTION WARNINGS

Over the last two days, three carcasses of Fraser’s dolphins have washed ashore between Diamond Head and Waikīkī. State and federal marine officials are investigating the unusual occurrence.

The DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR) is warning ocean-goers to exercise caution in nearshore waters on the southern coastline of O‘ahu. One of the dolphins appeared to have shark bites.

According to NOAA, the University of Hawai‘i Health and Stranding Lab will conduct post-mortem examinations, including the collection of tissues for laboratory analysis.

Fraser’s dolphins are typically found in deep, tropical waters and it’s estimated there are approximately 10,000 in Hawaiian waters.

Anyone encountering a live or deceased stranded marine mammal, is asked to call the NOAA Marine Wildlife Hotline at (888) 256-9840 or the DOCARE hotline at (808) 634-DLNR.

Team R&B spent a hell of day in the rain searching for seals. Some of the beaches had brown

water. The bay had huge waves crashing over the jetty, there was no one out on the beach at all. 

Their only find was Kawika R407 who was snoozing on shore. The waves were pounding and took a lot of the sand and vegetation away. They took a couple of photos and then ran for cover. They did a quick recheck when there was a pause in the rain and R407 was still there snoozing alone.

The stormy weather brought big surf and there were a couple of surfers out there. Brave in that sharks like dirty water.

Team R&B checked several spots, there were boulders on the road, there was a pole down. Both situations Team R&B called the police to report. 

They finally gave up and went home when they got caught in the worse rain, and the road was flooded, hard to see.  ( OKAY TEAM R&B, it is most important you stay safe!!!!)

3/23/2018 Monk Seal Dailies (part 2) PLEASE KEEP YOUR DISTANCE !

Today one of our loyal posse pals was on the west side and experienced this unfortunate situation. While at a site there were two ladies climbing down to near a sleeping seal. The seal was RH48 Lei Ola, as they got closer every attempt was made to flag them off, but they kept getting closer and closer taking photos. Finally one of them looked up and our posse called out to stop, get away, but instead they sat. Our posse pal was able to get some pictures and when they noticed their picture was being taken they decided to climb back up the cliff. 


As luck would have it the DLNR was on site today giving tickets to people parking illegally, and karma was at it's best today because these two offenders got a ticket and weren't happy about it.

I mention this for two reasons:
1)  Volunteers, posse, folks looking after the seals are faced with rude and clueless people on a regular basis. You try your best to do what you can to advise them of what is good viewing practices. But it's extremely frustrating when people just don't listen.
2) For people who are out there viewing seals, if someone is asking you to back away please be understanding. They are trying to protect the seal and in some cases it's for your safety.  Also realize you are one of many many people they have asked, you are not unique, it happens everyday. We do think once you listen and learn about the Hawaiian monk seals you will be more than willing to help keep them safe and allow them to rest peacefully.

9/8/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: R303 BG, Holokai RG40, RJ16/17 (PO4), Pohaku R028, RIP RR70, and Kaimana in the News

Lucky Lesley went to check the beach this morning and was pleasantly surprise by R303 BG stretched out along the beach plump and green.  She left a stinky package behind. ( back in the day NOAA would give folks a Poo & Spew tee shirt if you brought them samples of vomit or poop, I unfortunately never received one although I did collect poo once).

Miss Vicki was on the North Shore and found Holokai (RG40) hanging out in the same place for the past 3 days, he too is looking mighty green.  Vicki's second find of the day was RJ16 hanging out by the keiki pool just resting and being content.

Team Billand checked in on Pokaku (R028) they spoke to a few folks and put up a makeshift zone to help keep folks at the beach park away. Today is day 3 of her molt. Their second find was a big surprise!  They checked out Kahe and found a seal semi submerged, initially no tags were visible. Seal finally moved and Barb ID'd RR70 RIP. This is his first time Team Billand has ever found him at this beach all these years.

Gayle saw 3 critters on Rabbit Island today, two arrived together at 13:45. Gayle big surprise today was finding her favorite critter Kaiwi RK96 ducked in between some rocks. Good eye Gayle!

Tammy sent some absolutely adorable photos of RJ16 formerly known as PO4. Tammy reported he was laying in the tide pool and something startled him and he flip flopped around.  Thank you Tammy, I'm sure you had a good laugh.
