10/31/2014 DB Dailies: Kea&Buster@SB, Kolohe,Duke,UF&UU@RI, RIP,Benny&RK36@Maili Pt, Haupu@WP

Boo!!! ..... At 0615 I found an overnighted Kea (RN46) at the Sandy Beach outfall, just outside the Naupaka. He would depart at 0645. I did frequent checks and on my 0927 recheck he was back. He remained the rest of the day. Kea remained at dark.

At 0750 I found Buster (RV08) doing 7 minute dives at Blowhole. It was not surprising then, that a 1020 call from SB Life guard posse member Donovan advised of an animal at the Blowhole end of Sandy Beach. When I arrived at 1033 I found Buster (RV08). I cordoned him off. He has remained the rest of the day. He departed at 1802. Thank you Gayle

Makai duty was once again a sketchy situation with blasting white water on th lanai... wind & rain. Observations were at least difficult. I was able to ID Kolohe (RW22), and Duke (RA12), but 2 others were impossible. One was a medium sized critter with a new coat. I’m unsure about tags, There were just too many folds and wrinkles on the ventral to get a sex. The other was an U/F, smaller than the other Unknown, with a new coat and 2 red tags, I think I ruled out Kaiwi, but who it was is a mystery. Maybe tomorrow.

Team Billand called at 0620 with the report of RIP (RR70) at Maili Point.

At 1048 they advised that Benny (RE74) had joined RIP.

At 1220 the Billands reported Haupu (RB24) at White Plains. She departed at 1430.

At 1506 they called to advise they were responding to a Hotline call about 3 animals at Maili Guard Rails. At 1548 the Billands advised that it was not Guard Rails, but was , in fact, Maili Point. There were now three animals there RIP & Benny had been there. The new arrival was RK36 (R4DJ).

10/30/2014 DB's Dailies Kea&Buster@SB, Duke,Kolohe,UF, 2 UU@RI, RIP@Maili Pt, Pohaku@Banyans, Haupu@WP

At 0600 I found an overnighted Kea (RN46) in the Naupaka, at the Sandy Beach outfall. Posse member Barbara called at 0702 to advise that Kea had entered the water, swimming off to the west. At 0943 I was sitting there waiting for his return. He arrived and galumped up to the sand , fronting the Naupaka. I got the SPZ up just milliseconds ahead of 3 tour buses. Kimo Smith called at 1325 to advise that Buster (RV08) was hauling out to join Kea on the outfall. When I got there, at 1335 they were both there. After a recheck of RI, I returned to Sandy Beach at 1439 to find that Buster & Kea were swimming in the shallows fronting the outfall area. Kea would haul out again at 1447. Buster remained in the water, and finally departed at 1457. I did not see him again . Kea remains at dark.

Rabbit Island observations were made difficult today due to white water impacting the Lanai, and off and on rain. I had a cast of 5 critters , however, only Duke (RA12) & Kolohe (RW22) were identified. The others were an U/F medium sized animal with a new coat & 2 red tags, and a large and a small U/U.

Team Billand reported RIP (RR70) a Maili Point at 0703.

At 0712 Dana called with the report of Pohaku (RO28) at Banyan’s, KoOlina. The Billands confirmed at 0752.

At 1505 the Billands called to advise that life guards reported an animal arriving near the fence line at White Plains. Beverly Rexrode responded and confirmed the Haupu (RB24) ID. She advised that Haupu departed at 1635.

In the Yesterday’s News department, Mary Miyashiro sent shots of Rocky’s daughter, RF58, on Kauai.

Kimo Smith sent shots of his Ka’ena Point trek yesterday. He found RW02 @ Camp Erdman, Luana (RN58) @ the birth beach , Mokuleia, Nihoa(R912) @ Hidden Beach, RL42 & BG)R303) at the point. On the Waiane side trail he found RK36 at the 30 min mark, and Ka’ena (RO40) at the 20 min mark.
