February 11, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Lesley. Lesley's complete Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies. Not only were there a couple of critters but it appears the landscape has changed a bit from the storm.

Team Billand found RH92 at 7 am resting, actually in a deep sleep on shore on a westside beach. They called the hotline to report. They rechecked her several times during the day and she remained.

Late morning Team Billand watched a critter (unknown unidentified) doing 8 to 10 minute dives off

shore by campbells. They couldn't make an ID.

They came across Ka'ale RH32 already up on rocks, alone and sleeping. The wind was acting up, and the salt spray was still stinging.  When they went back to check on him a couple of hours later they were thrilled to find RK36 with Ka'ale.  RK36 is looking nice, healthy and robust. They did get a photo of his tag.

Team Billand stopped by the outfall and found the winds had been so strong over the last couple of days that the sign put up by NOAA was dangling from the fence.  It would be nice if they could replace it.


They then went to a nearby beach and found Kawena RH36 was next to RW02 PvKauai. There was no interaction while they were there to observe.  Kawena's applied bleach was visible along with her tags. RW02 was rolling about trying to find a good spot to settle. 
He was a quite the gentleman, calm and not bothering Kawena.

11/28/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: Benny, RN14, Ka'ale and 2 U/Us off Campbells

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Lesley. I included Lesley's full report and photos in part 2, she had a big day with five seals.

Team Billand was out at Makaha at 6 am found a seal snorting by the Naupaka. It was da Benny and he wasn't happy. The yoga couple was out again do their thing walked into in the zone. Benny reacted by leaving the zone. At 6:50 am Benny headed straight out in the water. After waiting for several hours Benny never came back, they did call the hotline to inform.

Team Billand's next find was RN14 at Maili. He was on lower rocks, kept looking around, but they never saw any other seals around.

Barbara was thrilled to find sweet Ka'ale at Kahe, on the rocks. He was on his back showing off his big white belly just chilling. He's looking very healthy nice girth and cute as ever.

Lastly Team Billand saw two critters foraging off of Campbells.  Initially there was just one seal foraging doing 5 minute dives, then the dive times changed because there now was a second seal. They spent time trying to get an ID but it's never easy when they're 300 ft off shore. Both adults, one was light in color (as in recently molted) little green around the face. The other was grubby fur. They both had tags but unable to read. That's okay just good to know they are out there.

11/1/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: U/U@Campbells, Ka'ale (RH32), Kekoa Alii (RK72), Lei Ola (RH48), Ua Malie (RT10), Kaimana (RJ58), 2 Rabbit Island Critters and Buster (V08)

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Tammy T and Gayle. Thank you for putting up with the steamy hot weather today. 

Team Billand captured an amazing sunrise, I had to look twice to see if it was in upside down, I assure you it's facing the right way. Their first find at Campbells is a U/U doing 6-7 minute dives. Critter has a nice clean coat, but unable to get any other info.  

Team Billands next stop at Maili brought them three critters. Ka'ale RH32 was on the front rocks, high up, resting alone. Just across from him resting mid rocks was his buddy Kekoa Alii RK72.  And then there was Lei Ola RH48 away from the boys in a deep sleep. She still has the nasty hook embedded in the left corner of her mouth, but she looks plump and resting peacefully. Boys were not bugging her today. 

Tammy T was on the North Shore today and her first find was Ua Malie RT10 hanging out on her own today, guess she had enough of family time. Only Ua knows, but glad Tammy spotted her despite she wasn't in her normal location.  Tammy's next find was RJ58 Kaimana looking content and resting quite peacefully. She was also alone on the shoreline. 


Gayle spotted two critters on Rabbit Island today and sent a beautiful shot of Makapuu Beach in all it's beauty.  Gayle also found Buster this evening at Sandy's she left him at 18:30. I wonder if he was the other adult on Moku Nui yesterday. Hmmmm Buster was that you?
