The past three days have been non stop action, seals at different locations, making it hard to watch them..so far apart.
Kermit was easy find, he is always there, and I am grateful for that. But the crowds that visit him, we educating many who still know nothing about Monk Seals and still want to go next to them.
After things settled we took off to search for more seals.
Nothing for a long while and I thought lets go to Koolina/Paradise Cove. Well, the usual spots were vacant, but on a scan of the beach next to Paradise cove..ta da aaaa... a seal, a large one. I was filled with excitement..running on the reef, jumped in the shallow water, crossed over and ran to the next Lagoon, which is a private area belonging to Campbells Estate. And wouldnt ya know..Rob couldnt find PARKING..I wish they would give us a SPACE just for monk seal responders there. Ya, Right.
So I reach the seal, its N3, Irma R010. I got no signs, no ropes, just me. I call Rob who is still looking for a space..then a security guard recognized Rob, takes him to the site..bringing signs. BUT..after talking to the guests, they tell me of another seal around the NEXT LAGOON. I head over the rocks, spot the seal, with three signs, one metal, one broken, one with no words. I call Rob, Bring more signs..hurry. It was R028, being visited by some tourists, way too close. Seal 101 and they back off. Finally signs posted but then, I got to go back to other lagoon to sign off Irma. The security agrees to do that for us..ALL RIGHT!!! Called Dana for some help and Jan Dill was coming. But NO PARKING! SO we told Jan, you can have our space..as we are switching cars, this local pulls past Jan and is right up our butts. Hey, this isnt a space for you, excuse me..Jan finally squeezes her car through. YES!!!
Next: Back to Kermit at Plains who is having lots of visitors but all is good.
Around 5ish, Kermit starts acting weird, tossing his head about, sniffing the air, vocalizing. We think perhaps another seal around. We look, nothing seen.
5:42pm ...there is something out there 10 feet off shore, is it a turtle, NOPE, a Seal, nope...It was a 6 to 8 foot tiger shark..HOLY SHIT. SHARK!!! I ran along shore advising folks, they all flew out of the water. Rob called Base Police, Lifeguards left for the day. Eveyone out of water..looking for the shark..Rob calls, SHARK at Kermits site again. I try so hard to get a photo, but the shark was too fast.
6:30pm A shark come back to Kermits site, this time, pulling up close to shore, two feet of water, flying along the shore, chasing something, My heart was pounding, myself and other guys follow this shark to Tower Two, it is huge, another one, more than 12 feet long..OH MY GOD. I am close to a SHARK..A TIGER. What was it chasing...It was too dark for a snap..and moving so fast. Base Police was right there, wondering what ta hell is that??? SHARK!!! YES!!!!
Just before seven pm, we gave up, said a prayer for Kermit. DAM..I am so pumped up, pissed I didnt get any shots of that huge thing..Shit!!!
Next: Koolina, removed signs in dark, tripping over rocks..pitch black..seal gone. Didnt remove the signs with Miss Irma, too dangerous to walk along those rocks. Will retrieve this am.
Next: go home!!!!!!!!! at 7:15pm.
