5/10/2018 Monk Seal Dailies (part 3) Yesterday's News: Lesley's Ka'ena Point Update 5/9

this is yesterdays report....

Tammy & I met at PO4 (D11) & PO5 (D5) site. We watch them for a short while then headed out to the point to search for RH32 "Ka'ale" that was seen with fishing line out of his mouth over the weekend and possibly sighted at the point on Tuesday.
At the point on Back Beach we found RR70 "RIP" and RH32 "Ka'ale" hauled out sleep on the coral beach. Phone calls and reports were made and the long wait begun. Some volunteers from HMAR arrived and later the NOAA team for assessing. RH32 was captured for assessment and the clear fishing line was seen going to the back of his throat. He was released and now prayers are that he hauls out in a more accessible location for another capture but this time to be taken in for x-ray.
A couple of possible reasons the seal was not removed and taken today: it was an assessment, the long distance and terrain between the seal's haul out location and truck, the stress that it could cause to the animal, there was no vet present and others that I may not know.

RR70 "RIP" was present the hole time
RN14 "Molokai" came by twice and on the second time also stayed around watching
RW02 "PVKauai" didn't come to Back Beach but did haul out into Main Pool and went straight to the reef island to sleep.

After this episode was over and teams left Tammy and I did a survey of the second part of the NARS, we had already checked first part coming in.
On our way out we stopped to check on a seal reported by hikers at Hidden Beach there we found RG40 "Holokai"

We ended our afternoon visiting the duo pup site and found little PO5 with it's new bleach applied by NOAA's team.
