Team Billand was out before the crack of dawn and arrived at Paradise Cove at 5 am. They got to the beach and found da Benny RE74 way up on the shore near two trees and left of footpath. Team Billand put up a zone and adjusted it as Benny decided to move further down. The hotline was called. Team Billand stayed with Benny for 3 hours, and had not heard back from anyone nor did they see any volunteer arrive. During that time they educated many guests and tourist. They met up with two nice ladies who recognized them from seeing them all the time. They wondered what they were doing that they checked on the seals so often.... that conversation is a whole different level of education. :-)
(Personally this proves that good work goes recognized, and you don't need the spotlight for people to know.... they are watching and listening.) Team Billand left at 8:05 am.
At 8:30 am Team Billand arrived at a Leeward Beach and spotted a seal coming in. There was a homeless woman sitting on the cliff and she let Barb know there was a seal. Team Billand thanked her for her help.
Team Billand ID'd the critter as Ka'ale RH32. Once again there were no signs of hooks or leader line trailing. ( Such a mystery, it will be nice once NOAA has the opportunity to check on him again.)
As Ka'ale approached he was cautious and hauled up on the rocks.
At 8:58 Team Billand arrived at their next stop and found two critters together to the right on the rocks. It was Kekoa Alii RK72 and Lei Ola RH48 laying next to each other snoozing. If Kekoa moved she would give him a tail thrash and go back to sleep. At time she would stretch, he would sniff her she would give him a whoop and back to sleep. Lei Ola still has her lip pierced with a hook.
Team Billand checked in on them later in the afternoon, both seals were there. Kekoa was now in the shallows and Lei Ola was sleeping just to the left of him between the rocks.
Pretty cute seeing them together even though he's going to be 7 years old and she's going on 2. Who knows he being a protector and maybe someday there will be a love story to rival the days of Kermit and Irma.
Team T&D (Tammy and Dave) made their way to visit with Honey Girl and PO2. Looks like Mom is thinning and PO2 is getting pretty portly. I imagine there will be a weaner. Tammy and Dave noticed there was a lot of debris around their area. So being the good people they are they decided to clean up what they could, so when it's time for the pup to be on it's own, it won't be getting itself into trouble.
