7/29/2016 DB's Dailies: Kawena@AD, U/F,Aukai,Cass,Kainoa,RG32,Kala,Benny&Kea@Rabbit Island, Ua Malie&PO5@Turtle Bay

Kawena would get her bling today, but it was quite a wait. Marilyn was at AD on her early morning check and found her in a tide pool at 0530. The NOAA gang arrived but it would be a waiting game. She finally hauled out and Tracy called at 1023 to advise that Kawena is now officially, RH36/37.

At 0842 I found the U/F, I believe to be (but can not prove)Sadie , left of 1BS on Rabbit Island. She would move down and enter the water at 1010 and haul out again ate 1227 fronting 3BS.

At 0848 I found a gang of 4 hangin’ out left of Seal Rock Inlet. They would prove to be Kaino(RN04), Aukai (RL12), Cass(RG06) & RG32). All would enter the water , and all would haul out again in the afternoon.

At 1203 on a pan I found Kala (RH76) hauling out to the left rock flat. She would galumph to the sand and remained there the rest of the day.

At 1243 my U/F was snoozin’ at 3BS, when Kainoa & RG32 hauled out to bother her. It was short lived however because right behind them there came the Benny (RE74), who immediately took over and ran them both off, only to depart himself a bit later.

On a pan at 1343 I found an animal near the vegetation line, newly arrived behind Seal Rock Inlet. To my complete surprise, at 1347 that beautiful , white, right fore flipper came into view. After a 10 day absence, Kea (RN46) was back !

Dr. Tom sent an Ua Malie&PO5 shot from the Keiki Pool at Turtle Bay at 1058. Thank you Tom !

HMMA Update from July 28th

At 0928 a report was made about a seal hauled out at Kaupo Beach. Colleen responded and reported Right Spot (R016). ID was made by her natural bleach mark on her right side. DB also checked in with the same report and ID. At 1207 Jeannie checked in with a report of Holokai (RG40) at Kaihalulu Beach. Marilyn checked in at 1856 to report Right spot had departed from Kaupo Beach.

Barbara checked in via email with an update from Alan Davis. Kawena slept up on the beach near the naupaka. Not a whole lot of activity observed during the shift.

7/28/2016 Turtle Bay Family

First I would like to thank Jeannie M. for sending these photos of Holokai, Ua Malie and PO5... all part of the Honey Girl (R5AY) family.  I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Jeannie for all the years she has put in both unofficially and officially.  She has been out at Turtle Bay watching over Honey Girl, Right Spot for many years and certainly has seen the new generation grow up.

7/28/2016 DB's Dailies: Kawena@AD, Right Spot@Kaupo Beach Park, Kala,U/F / RG32,Aukai,Cass&U/F@Rabbit Island, Pohaku@Maili, Ka'ale@Mokuleia, RIP@Ka'ena Point

A Kaupo Beach Park posse member called at 1035 with the report of an animal there. When I arrived at 1045 I found things well in hand, with Right Spot (RO16) duly cordoned off by Colleen Heyer with the able assistance of Michelle. Right Spot had last been reported at MCBH on 6-23-16. She has remained the rest of the day. Marilyn called at 1841 to advise that Right Spot had just departed.

At 1103 I found Kala (RH76) on the left end rock flats of Rabbit Island, and as I panned to the right I became aware of what would prove to be the U/F I believe to be Sadie (but can not prove), at the left end of the beach, and then a group of 3 behind Seal Rock Inlet, which would turn out to be RG32, Cass(RG06)&Aukai(RL12). The U/F, I believe to be Nani (but can not prove) was by herself at Rocky Right Beach.

At 1526 Team Billand called with the welcome report of Pohaku (RO28) at Maili.

Word came from Kauai this afternoon that Pohaku’s child had gotten her new bling, an is now officially RH80/81.

HMMA Update from July 27th

At 0912 a report was made of a seal hauled out at Hukilau Beach. No ID could be made at the time of sighting. No further word at this time.

Anissa checked in via email from the Alan Davis site. Gayle was also there setting up the free-standing signs as Kawena had hauled out onto the rocks just near the edge of the SPZ. Kawena was there for 15 minutes and then went in the water for a swim until 1030. Kawena took a nap but was awaken by the tide and moved further up the beach. Kawena was observed playing with sticks and rocks. At 1130 Kawena settled for a nap. From 1225 to 1315 some more swimming took place in the tide pool. Some short dives observed.

7/27/2016 DB's Dailies: Kala,Benny,U/F, Kekoa,Aukai, Cass, U/F, U/U&RG32@Rabbit Island

On Marilyn’s 0530 check of AD, Kawena was out for a swim. I’ve gotten no further word today.

It was yet another bumper crop day at Rabbit Island with a cast of 9. At 0908 I found a gang of 4 out on the left end rock flats, that would prove to be the U/F , I believe to be Sadie (but can not prove), being attended be Benny (RE74). He was in a day long running battle with Kekoa(RK72). Benny kept running him off, and he kept coming back. Benny was definitely in charge.  Also there was poor little Kala (RH76) just trying to stay outta’ the way of these outta’ control males.

On a pan at 0927 I found what would prove to be Aukai (RK72) newly arrived at Seal Rock Inlet. She would be joined there by Cass (RG06) at 1206. Kekoa would also be in and out multiple times thru the day.

On a pan at 1018 I found a newly arrived group of 3 , partially visible at Rocky Right Beach. They would prove to be the molter U/F, that I believe to be Nani (but can not prove), RG32, and an U/U animal I could never see enough of to make a call.

The only news out of quadrant came from posse member Tammy T., who spent quality time with Ua Malie&PO5 at Turtle Bay today. Thanks Tammy !!

In the Yesterday’s News department, Val sent along a couple of shots of PK3 on Kauai. Thanks Val !
