August 22, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team T&D and Team Billand.

Dave and Tammy did Ka'ena Point today. Their first find was Luana RN58 and it turns out she is the pot of gold.  Tammy captured a photo of a rainbow and Luana is the treasure at the end.

Their next find was Ka'ena RO40 at the entrance of his pool. While leaving Ka'ena Dave spotted something move. They took a closer look and there was Kalua RL42. He was pretty well hidden, if he hadn't moved they probably would have missed him.

Once again Team Billand arrived at the pupping site before 6 am. Upon arrival they called the hotline and left message on Mom and Pups location.  Today makes Day 34.

Pohaku and Nanea entered the water and went to Nanea's Cove to explore, the surf was high and waves were crashing. Mom was very protective as the Nanea was having a ball getting tossed about.
Today Barbara noticed Nanea learned how to dodge a wave, much like how the surfers dive under when the waves are coming up.  This kid is learning how to take care of herself.

7:30 am Kalani RN14 comes into the area, but did not stay long and left.
At 8:05 am Kalani came back a second time while Mom and Pup were by the twin rocks. He snuck around, but Pohaku doesn't miss a thing and went for him. Kalani left again. (These boyz never learn).
Pohaku and Nanea took off into the channel at 9:13 and returned at 9:45 am.

Visitors started arriving to the beach around 10 am. Just then Kalani appears AGAIN and this time Benny is coming by. They came from different directions, Benny from Waianae and Kalani from the channel.
Benny RE74 came in looking at Pohaku, then left. No excitement here, just Benny being a gentleman ( right?)
Kalani came back to Mom but all Pohaku had to do was bark and he took off, but hung around and made one last attempt to check her out again, then he was gone.  (young and foolish)

Pohaku and Nanea went over to the other end under the trees exploring when the buoys in the water were just too irresistible for Nanea. She went straight for them and Mom right with her. Pohaku lifted the ropes on her back, Nanea mouthed the buoy, held it with flippers, under it and over.  Pohaku came over to try to get her to move away.  Finally Mom and Pup landed by the signs and they had a nursing session and then slept.

They woke up with the waves rolling the pup and moving mom too. Pohaku then entered the water, Nanea still rolling about and then went for a swim.

One more seal came in, Nanea was announcing she was hungry and wanted to eat.  This is when Team Billand saw NOAA OLE Ted Kerns and US Agent Dave Carruthers. They watched the pup and mom coming in. They had to block the entrance to keep people away.
NOW there is another seal coming in and Team Billand believes it to be RIP RR70. He was not green and had a small scar over left eye. (Rips' markings)  He came in close to Mom and Pup, then gentley left the area.

Team Billand left at 2:30 for a much needed break and returned at 3:30. Pohaku and Nanea were still asleep at the entrance by the signs.
At 4 pm they decided to call it a day.
