Team Billand arrived at the pupping site just before 6 am. They began their search with volunteer Karen looking for Mom and Pup. They covered more ground by splitting up. Then at 6 am, they found Pohaku foraging. Suddenly there was a lot of splashing going on, was there another seal? No, Momma Pohaku caught herself a big red eel with white stripes. She tossed it to the right and left like a dog with a chew toy. Nanea was right by her, and then she begain to help Mom rip into the eel. Good lesson for the little one, and a great experience to watch this unfold.
11 am Pohaku and Nanea landed back at birth beach for another fast feed and a nap.
Team Billand met a new volunteer Steve, a nice man who can speak Japanese. This made outreach to the tourist easy, and they were happy to have him explain about the seals.
Nanea spent time "mouthing" the Naupaka and moves to Mom and climbs up on her, smashing Mom who fought back by moving away and further up. Pohaku presents to Nanea and she begins to nurse.
Waves continue to shoot up the shore, surf was getting dangerous. Mom and Pup move once more.
At 3:30 Team Billand called it a day. They were tired and fried.
