Team Billand observed two critters in the outfall before 7 am, they were fighting a lot with each other. Lots of vocalizing out loud to the amusement of the two fishermen. Well our two feisty critters turn out to be beavis and butthead, er, I mean Kalani RN14 and butthead RH32. (okay okay Kaale butthead). They foraged in the outfall, but Team Billand never witnessed them eating anything, mostly fighting. This went on for about 40 minutes, and then the boys were gone.
Team Billand left to check out a nearby haul out. Sure enough there were two seals again fighting and vocalizing. Hmmmm could it be? Oh yes there the bosom buddies were at each other again. Ka'ale came up first, and Kalani was right after him.
RN14 Kalani is and Ka'ale seems not so happy with him, He was fighting and opening his mouth so big Team Billand could see his tongue and teeth, and a good opportunity to check no hooks or fishing line.
Kalani RN14 wouldn't leave Ka'ale along, but left swam out and continued to fight. Team Billand got quite the show, especially with these two knuckleheads.
Then at 8:15 am Team Billand spotted RW02 PvKauai on shore at a west side beach, he was alone and undisturbed. He his looking nice, plump and healthy. Compared to the bosom buddies, RW02 is peaceful dude, quite content being on his own,
At 9:30 Team Billand driving by a popular westside beach and spotted a "yellow" zone. They pulled over and found Da Benny RE72. Benny was snoozing the morning away and visitors were very respectful. (I'm going to assume the life guards put up the yellow tape, but can't say for sure). Then Team Billand got a nice surprise recognizing one of the families. Old posse pal and one of the original creators of the monk seal volunteer response networks John and Lisa Johnston with their little girl. (Also need to mention John is an incredible photographer too). Nice to hear everyone is doing well and two old friends got to catch up while hanging out with da Benny!
Team Billand wasn't done, next stop they spotted a seal sleeping on its side. All they could see was a small white bleach spot on its hind flippers. The waves came in and the seal moved, they got to ID R330 Squinty, small scar on his head and left eye.
By 1:00 Team Billand went back to check the west side beach. They spotted a seal draped over the rocks and they were able to ID Kawena RH36 by her tags. Team Billand was a little nervous not sure if she was okay, maybe she was stuck?
But no she was just fine, her breathing was fine and then she finally moved. Her persistence to get out of this tight spot, by bobbing and moving her hind flippers.
Then Kawena headed to the shallows, and for a moment they thought she was going to enter the "playboy pond" but she did not. She WOULD have been the first know female to do so, it seems there is a long list of boys who have entered the pool ( Benny, Kermit, Kerby, R018, Kimo Kai, RW02, RIP and Kekoa.) Just a little fun fact for you all. LOL
