April 10, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Lesley, Team Billand and our favorite Canadian posse pals. Team D&T (Darlene and Todd) are back on island from Canada!  Lesley's complete Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.

Darlene and Todd are entertaining there family who are first time visitors to Hawaii. And I am sure over the years their family heard all about the infamous Hawaiian monk seals, so I am sure they have been on a mission since they arrived.  Well today was their payoff, when their most favorite seal Kaiwi RK96 showed up at OCC.   Thank you Dar and Todd for sharing and I hope you are enjoying Hawaii with your family.

Team Billand started their day early and just before 7 am, when they spotted a seal from a far. When they arrived at the site they were happy to find Da Benny. Team Billand called the hotline and let Melina know right away.

Then at 8:30 am Team Billand saw a seal off shore by Campbells as soon as they took a couple of photos the critter was gone. One of the photos shows a cookie scar, but other than that nothing to go on. Seal was reported as a UU.

Just before 11 am at a westside location they spotted RN14 Kalani sleeping alone half in the water, and butt on the rocks.  Little fishy were nibbling at his body, which he seemed to like. Wonder if it's like a fish pedicure, when they nibble away the dead skin.

Team Billand's next find was at 11 am, when they spotted a seal
way out in between the rocks. At first they had a hard time making an ID and the seal was so well hidden and snoozing, but finally there was a flipper flex and there it was, Kekoa Alii RK72. He was ID'd by his signature facial scar, the bumps on his back.

Next siting was when Team Billand were on their way out to Ka'ena West. They did a quick check of the cove before heading out and they were shocked and thrilled to see little Puna RK88 resting on a small piece of sandy beach. He moved up and snuggled against the rocks.

Then out to Ka'ena West and initially they were batting a big zero. Finally they got lucky and spotted two seals together snoozing.  There was R3CU and RL42 Leia sound asleep close to each other.  Once Team Billand made the IDs they left so no one would notice or bother them.
