April 27, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Marilyn, Canadian Posse Darlene and Todd and Lesley.  Lesley's Ka'ena Update is part two of the dailies.

Our Canadian posse Team D&T once again had the pleasure of spending time with their most favorite Kaiwi.  To put the icing on the cake they got to see Momma with her 2018 son K24.  (which between you and me like to call him Bruno, as in Bruno Mars 24K gold, but that's just an old blog lady having some fun).

Marilyn did the Ka'ena hike this morning and then returned home to check out Rabbit Island. Late afternoon clouds obscured most of the sunlight. Marilyn did see two critter on island.
UJF (unknown juvenile female) located about 40 feet left of the 1BS on left point beach. Juvenile/sub adult size, fairly green belly and two tags. There were no scars, or natural or applied bleaches visible. Marilyn thinks this critter is too large to be one of the 2018 Rabbit Island pups.
UA (unknown adult) found on the rocks near SRI. The seal did not change position during her viewing time, and she could not see belly of flippers. This could be but unable to confirm RL12 Aukai.

Team Billand found RN14 Kalani at 9 am. They got to the site and there were tourist looking over and taking pictures. RN14 was alone on the rocks today, and on their last check he was still out there late this afternoon.

Team Billand then headed over to a westside beach and found da Benny RE74 on lower rocks, alone and snoozing just fine. Benny then decided to take a dip in the shallows for a bit, came right back up on the rocks.
Team Billand left to check out other areas and when they came back later afternoon for their last check, Benny was now in the lower section. The water was starting to splash over him but he didn't move. He was in full snooze mode. Benny is looking robust, lots of scratches and some dings on his head for this old boy.  He's going to be 17 this year.
