HOWEVER, I want to take this opportunity to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY Lesley, where ever she may be enjoying her day! We (your monk seal ohana) wish you many many years of joy, health and happiness. Thank you for all you do, as we appreciate you!
At 7:20 am Team Billand spotted two seals already up on the rocks at a westside haul out. They were both dry and after getting a tag shot Team Billand ID'd Kalani RN14. Tge other critter was ID as RG28. His cookie wounds are healing and the one on his back is still oozing a little but healing.
RN14 was snoozing next to RG28, but N14 would dip into the small water hole to cool off. RG28 would follow, one of them took a pee in the pond. Kalani RN14 moved and RG28 moved to the right and flipped on his side.
Team Billand headed west and before they made their Ka'ena West trek, they spotted two seals. They were surprised to see Ka'ale RH32 and RL42 Leia. Now there's an unlikely couple. When Ka'ale moved to look at Leia, she would vocalize to him and he back off. Young Ka'ale feeling his oats.
The big surprise for Team Billand when they were on their Ka'ena West trek at 2:20 they spotted a chubby seal, but had no idea who this could be. Once they got a look at the tag RG40 Holokai. The last time Team Billand saw this boy he had just been weaned ( a few years back). Although there are Holokai sightings, it was a nice surprise for Team Billand.
Last up for Team Billand when they were on their way back from Ka'ena West they found Lei Ola RH48. She was laying on her side and at first Team Billand could not see the "line and hook" but after a few moments they did see, the line remains, and the shank was barely visible. She seems fine and was resting on the rocks.
Marilyn had the day off so she spent some time checking the south east quadrant. One stop she noticed there were several folks around and sure enough there was a seal. When she got closer she spoke with posse pal Gayle who pointed out RK24. Apparently the little bugger got a hook in his left front flipper. NOAA and the hotline had been notified. Turns out RK96 Kaiwi was about 50 feet away from RK24. Volunteers were also on site.
When Marilyn got home and checked her photos she noticed a hook in RK24's lower lip ( he went for the two for one deal). Marilyn called the hotline and reported her findings.
Marilyn viewed Rabbit Island fromt he pier from about noon to 2:30. Conditions were good for viewing.
On left point beach there was a juvenile seal with a darker coat and 2 tags. Marilyn never got a good look at the belly, so it is being reported as a U/J.
About 1 pm a larger adult seal hauled out very briefly and checked out the UJ. That seal then immediately went back into the water so there isn't a good photo or clues as to who it good be, reported as a U/A.
While observing Marilyn thought there was a seal behind the waterfront rocks way to the right side of Rocky Right Beach. Then at 12:42 the seal finally moved a little to the left and became visible. The critter is a large adult female with a very green coat and at least one tag. Marilyn is willing to bet two cats that this is RL12 Aukai back on Rabbit Island. Hmmmm we shall see :-)
