12/29/2018 Monk Seal Dailies (part 2) Lesley's Ka'ena Update

After the rain we had yesterday it was impossible to predict what we could expect to find out monitoring.
Roads were extremely slippery but the sunny day and wind worked on their magic.

The park was full and we did lots of outreach.

Our first seals were an overnighted R330 "Squinty" in front of the house (he was still there in the afternoon) and also an overnighted RK36 "Kauai Kolohe" at Birth Beach. It was great to see him back around here again.

Out at the point little RK88 "Puna" was a big attraction. He was sleeping half hidden in a Naupaka bush then when he woke up he decided to take a very long detour of big rocks to get down to the water in Main Pool.
He has a new cut/bite on his muzzle on the right side.
RN30 (M - Pohaku's son) had been in there since we arrived, being tossed back and forth by the big sets.
both seals played around for a while then decided to make it back up Main Beach.
These 2 have been here all week but it was the first time I got to see them interacting.

All photos were taken with zoom from the top of the "Princess
Rock"

On back beach there was a big fresh wallow and trail down to the water. On the way some scat with several big octopuses in it. Someone over fed himself and couldn't digest their dinner.  More tomorrow

Yesterday RW02 "PVKauai" was in front of the house
