12/2/2017 Monk Seal Dailies: Benny, RN14, Buster, 3 Rabbit Island Critters

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Marilyn and Gayle. I know Lesley got Ka'ena Point information of 6 critters. I have not received any emails as of yet, so I am sure tomorrow we'll get the full report.

Team Billand arrived at Makaha at 5:45 am in the pitch black but notice lights on shore and two people yelling. Team Billand shine their light and saw they were near Benny and asked them to not go near the seal.  Their response " It barked at us, what is that? what's wrong with it? I lost my slippers, I want my slippers."  Thanks to Team Billand they shines the light at the waters edge and the woman got her slippers. Slippers found, the ladies moved on and left area at 6:30 am. Team Billand put up a make-shift sandy wall and twigs and called the hotline.
At 7 am the entire household of folks in the Bamboo House all came out. They were bouncing a volley ball, kid were by the gate where Benny was asleep. Benny woke up looking around now alert. Team Billand had to leave but as they walked away from the site Benny left at 7:15 am.

Team Billands only other find today was RN14 at Maili. He was sleeping alone on the top rocks.

Marilyn skipped the Ka'ena Point hike today because of the weather and various ailments. So she checked the local Hawaii Kai spots and her only find was Buster. At 0951 Buster V08 up in the naupaka at the sewer outfall end of Sandy Beach. There had been a fairly high tide overnight which probably drove him up that far. The hotline was called for someone to set up a SRA.
When she returned to Sandy Beach a little after 1430, Buster had moved closer to the water, but still above the steep dropoff  down to the water. He is looking very green and suspect he will molt soon. He was ID'd by his left eye scar and his male belly. He has some creases in his belly that Marilyn had not recorded before.

Gayle also found Buster at Sandy Beach. She first spotted him this morning and left him there at 17:30 this evening.  Gayle also spotted three critters on Rabbit Island.
