Team Billand received a call from a friend at KoOlina that there was a seal at Secrets. The hurried down and arrived at 8:46 am to find a couple who was approaching the seal for a "kodak moment". Rob was able to quickly get to them before they got too close. He put up the signs and spent time with the couple educating them and the others that arrived about Hawaiian monk seals. Benny looks a little weary, thinner but alert to people and sounds around him. The hotline was called and a volunteer came close to 11 am.
When Team Billand arrived at Maili they saw a little seal clean in appearance. Once the got a read on the tag they ID'd Kaale RH32. Barbara was hoping for Lei Ola who they desperately been looking searching for. He was resting on the rocks alone, looking pretty darn sweet and innocent. Team Billand decided not stay in the area, they did want to attract attention to the seal.
This morning from the driveway Lesley could see a familiar shape down at Camp Erdman Point. With Rip & Squinty showing up there lately, she can no longer "guess" the ID. On her way to work she stopped to check on the critter and ID'd RW02 PVKauai. He's looking healthy in his new coat.
Late this afternoon I checked all the beaches in the area, RW02 PVKauai was the only seal around.
Lesley was called over to Birth Beach by a local fisherman whom she met over the years of checking the area. As Lesley noted "Times have changed and years of outreach have their payback. A local fisherman asking for your number. " YA DONE GOOD LESLEY!
Gayle spotted four critters at Rabbit Island. There was one seal at Sandy Beach today and before Gayle or the volunteer got there the seal had just left, to be listed as UU. Lastly Gayle reported Kaiwi at Kaimana's today but unfortunately was having technical difficulties forwarding the photo from her phone.
