October 25, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Team Billand and Lesley. Lesley's Ka'ena update is part two of the dailies.
We also have a tidbit in the really old news department.  Tammy of Team T&D got word the untagged female they saw while on the Big Island last month is "Temp 900". Temp 900 was first seen on the Big Island early this year, this was confirmed by NOAA and if Temp 900 is still around next year she'll get a permanent ID.  Wonder where she came from?

Team Billand first critter of the day was Kekoa RK72 on a west side beach. He was alone, mid rocks sleeping.  Team Billand didn't stay, as they went to check on another seal.

They headed over to plains and found RO28 Pohaku just before 9 am. She was on the shore, and the lifeguards were setting up a zone. They stayed with her for over an hour and she was resting comfortably when they left.

Team Billand went back to check on Kekoa and now he was in the pond, snoozing with his butt on the rocks and body in the water.
Suddenly they spot another seal, big and green. They spotted the tag and they were able to ID RN14 Kalani.  He left and then returned, galumphed onto the rocks. He was flipping over, rolling in the pond, when he realized Kekoa was in the shallow pond.  They made eye contact, Kekoa started towards him, RN14 Kalani let out a bark and Kekoa stood back respectfully.
Wave after wave came barreling in fast and running over them. Finally Kekoa took off leaving RN14 alone.
On Team Billand's last visit both seals were gone for the day.

When Team Billand was passing Makaha they scanned the shoreline for seal and sure enough there was one, a fat green one.  When they went to check they determined it was Da Benny RE74.  Just as they arrived volunteer Tammy arrived and they talked "Benny" story.
There were lots of people surfing, boogie boarding in the super surf.
Benny was resting, not sleeping, aware of people but remained on shore. He got a hit good by a wave but still stayed.

As a bonus Team Billand came across a cool turtle. Unfortunately there were some pesky kids that kicked sand at him, and well his expression says it all.
