October 2, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Today's dailies are brought to you by Marilyn, Team Billand, Lesley, posse pal Vicki and Melody.   Lesley's Ka'ena update is part 2 of the dailies and Vicki's sightings from yesterday part 3.

At 6:15 am Team Billand went to KoOlina and found RH92 there again. There were no signs, security came and they checked everywhere. Team Billand called the hotline to report RH92 and that there were no signs available.
(To me this seems odd, in that there have been at least one if not two seals at this very populated beach for quite some time, and there are no signs available?  If a volunteer can not respond, then why not have signs available for very capable people to put up?)
In this case Security improvised and used the beach chairs to block off an area.  Barbara helped and made a couple of adjustments so people had a safe passage.
Robert headed over to another part of KoOlina to check on another critter.  Barbara stayed with Nalani RH92 hoping a volunteer would arrive, but left leaving RH92 alone after a while.

Robert had gone to check on Pohaku RO28 and security already had sign up. When Barbar joined him they spent time educating lots of people who came by to look. Everyone was appreciative and respectful. Team Billand stayed until 10 am and up to that point no volunteer had arrived.

All before arriving at KoOlina Team Billand did make a quick stop on their way and found RG28 aka Lefty on lower rocks alone and snoozing.
When Team Billand went back to check on RG28 they were
surprised to find Kawena RH36 on the other side snoozing on a small patch of sand looking very healthy.

At another west side location Team Billand found RL42 Leia and RN14 Kalani. RL42 was in a pond upside down (silly seal) and RN14 was across from her, watching her every move.  Leia RL42 is looking quite lovely and Kalani well he's green. LOL

Team Billand did the Ka'ena West trek and found Ka'ena RO40 alone, sleeping in peace.
On the way out of Ka'ena West side they noticed a seal up on the shore at Yoks.  They checked it out and it was RIP RR70.  They were able to deter a group of foreign tourist that had just arrived and were heading for the seal.  Timing is everything.

Team Billand had an EIGHT seal day!

Marilyn drove by Sandy Beach on her way to work this morning
and hit the jack pot. She found a seal and was able to ID R1KT by his T37 tag. He has a new coat and looking handsome. There are 2 parallel line scars in the middle of his back which Marilyn had not noticed before.  He may have been the molting "subadult" on Rabbit Island from the past weekend.
Near him there were seal trails from higher up on the beach, he might have been there over night.
In response to Marilyn's sighting, Gayle confirmed that Buster boy was there yesterday on 10/1. Which is very good news to hear he's back in the neighborhood.

Melody sent news that Rocky RH58 went to visit again today. She did notice that it looks like a bit of "cracking" of her fur on her belly and there were small pieces of molt in her wallows.
Melody spent most her day in the city and received an afternoon text that Rocky had returned. By the time Melody got to see her Security had put up signs.  Melody did notice fresh footprints very close to her which is always upsetting.  Rocky was in full snooze mode sleeping very soundly. Melody sat with her through a beautiful sunset and a couple of rainbows (life is good).   Melody will check in the morning if she is still there.
