March 17, 2019 Monk Seal Dailies

Todays dailies are brought to you by Team Billand, Marilyn and more cuteness from our pal Val.

CORRECTION: Writing yesterdays dailies I got confused and thought Marilyn had done the Ka'ena Trek with Lesley and THEN headed over to the west side to continue the trek.  I was wrong and confused ( not the first time).  So to clarify Marilyn did the Ka'ena West trek solo and caught up with Team Billand while on the west side.

So onward and upward to what was happening today!
Marilyn checked out the southeast side sites from about 8:30 - 10:30. Going from location to location she did find the beautiful RK96 Kaiwi ID'd by her small NB on her forehead. Then not too far away was RW22 Kolohe easily ID by his cueball NB behind his RFF and his applied N22 bleach.  They were both resting comfortable and undisturbed.
Next stop for Marilyn was to Makai Pier where she observed Rabbit Island for about an hour. The conditions were sunny but there was a haze and intense winds. Upon arrival there was one seal near the waterfront rocks between the 3BS and seal rock inlet. Shortly after the critter entered the water and about 15 minutes later she spotted a seal newly hauled ou on the rocks near Seal Rock Inlet. She is pretty sure it is the same critter reported as an Unknown Adult (UA). She could not confirm the sex or identifying marks and did see at least one tag.

Team Billand headed over to White Plains this morning and just before 7 am they found Pohaku RO28 hauled out already with a zone around her. She is looking fine, no new markers and a little plump.  They called the hotline to report.

Then by 10:30 Team Billand was back on the west side checking in on the cast of characters. As they arrived they saw from a distance three seals scurrying on the rocks, and one seal in the shallows.
Kekoa RK72 was their first ID, he was slumped over the rocks, looking at something.
RN14 Kalani was the second seal coming up and making his way on the rocks.
Kawena RH36 was what they were looking at and chasing. She B-lined for the spot she always goes to but the boys weren't letting her.  She went higher up, and Kekoa went to her sniffing all about. Then Kalani RN14 needed to share his excitement by vocalizing, and end result boys will be boys so Kekoa and Kalani went at each other.
Kawena being the smart wahine, stayed still and let them work it out. Kekoa help back and RN14 galumphed over to Kawena. She was laying there higher up and RN14 blocked the inlet with his body. Kekoa just watched and seems they finally settled in.
Back to look at the shallows there was RW02 PvKauai who had been there just chilling. He made his way to lower rocks and remained.

When the waves started rising, RW02 got tossed about, rolled and turned around. He wedged his body by the rocks in the shallows and just layed there.  Waves were increasing in size, time for Team Billand to head out.
