At 0959, posse member Bob Ubersax called with the report of an animal in the cove on the Sandy Beach side of the Blowhole Lookout. There had been nobody there on my previous 3 checks. When I arrived at 1010 I found Kea (RN46). He has remained the rest of the day. Marilyn&Gayle did the late check. Kea remained at dark.
At 0957 the Billands called advising that they had received word of an animal at Paradise Cove. Upon arrival at 1022 they confirmed the Haupu (RB24) ID.
At 1058 they reported the arrival of Kolohe (RW22) to join Haupu at PC.
At 1402 the Billands received word of an animal at the Maipalaoa Canal. When they arrived at 1440 they found a hauled out Nihoa (R912). Madhatter advised that Nihoa departed at 1811, due to Idiots !
I’ve saved the best for last. The highlight of the day was a DanaText at 1430 advising that Honey Girl (R5AY) had just pupped on the North Shore!!! This is pup #9 for this girl !! Shots are from the NOAA Facebook site, unknown photograph. Well.... it’s not exactly not last.
In the Yesterday’s News department, I got an email from Nicholas Vargas, a member of Ama’s DOFAW (Dept. Of Forestry&Wildlife)crew. He provided shots of none other that Nani (RK60/61) on Moku Nui on 2-23-15.

Whaaattt another Madhatter!
Madhatter! How did you like your experience with R912 yesterday?
R912 has been in our lives for a while, she came to oahu about 4 years ago. When she arrived, she was hooked, but, dehooked herself.
Then while we were at Kaena Pt, we saw her on the rocks, with a big wound on her head, it was ...a shark bite per NOAA. But she healed herself again.
Then she gave us two beautiful pups, L42 and Luana. She is a tough cookie, but, to see kids and adults abuse her...just hurts my heart. I am glad you were out there yesterday, it was meant to be.
To see all that garbage around her, just so disturbing to me. I wanted to go out there and get it out of her way. But she lay there chilling..as seals just go with the flow. They accept so much, its really incredible how much they tolerate.
I worry for Miss Fat Haupu RB24...she is so big, very slow, but some how she gets around things and people. I was glad she showed up at Paradise cove again.
To see Kolohe swiftly come in and go towards Haupu was amazingly FUN. But Haupu told Kolohe, BACK OFF right away and he did, then both just lay there for all to watch.
Per Warren, the leaving of both animals was...ROMANTIC or Kolohe just a horny toad. Hey Kolohe, be nice, Miss Haupu is FAT and PREGNANT...treat her nice boy.
Thanks Bev for going out so we could leave..Thanks to warren for being there after BEV.
Our seals need our help..we got to be there for the haul outs best we can..so we can continue to educate those that insist on going in the zone, TALKING TO THE SEALS like they were PETS. Or trying to make the seals move for a YOUTUBE SHOT.
Taking care of monk seals, is not easy..it takes alot of hours in the hot sun, long hours standing, protecting..and now here comes a beautiful pup for R5AY yesterday. Oh my gosh, photos of the seals were PRICELESS. To those going out there to area, take care of R5AY and Pup...educate. Take photos, as who knows what comes . Enjoy the little one, they grow fast..
TO R5AY...you are an incredible mom..over the years, providing us with such precious pups. To survive hookings, to some how survive a NET...give folks a ring side seat of the birth...THAT IS A GIFT FROM HEAVEN!!!!! A gift that none of you will ever forget.
Good luck to all volunteers out there...and good luck little pup..hope you grow up to be old.
GOD KEEP YOU ALL....SAFE and HAPPY.
