1-14-11 West and SouthWest Beaches on Oahu

It always saddens me to see our water and shoreline is this condition. I remember quite of few years back after the 40+ days of rain and looking out on the beach being tears to see how the beautiful turquoise color was gone... this was before my involvement with the monk seals... Now when I look I can't believe these animals have to live in that crap (literally)....  There has to be some type of solution to this... it happens over and over again...  just my random thought... glad there weren't any animals in the W and SW quadrant the last couple of days. (Thanks Team Billand for sharing.... you're very brave to be out there.) ~donna~

We tried to cover as many beaches, we wanted to see if there were ANY without debri, but, every single place we went to, was full of crap. Lots of it was tree limbs, logs, telephone poles, golf balls, tennis balls, kids toys, light bulbs, some needles, eight floaters, dead bird, car parts, batteries, flies, ONE GLASS BALL...YIPPEE. Slippers, shoes, plastics of all kinds. Candy rappers, buckets, TIRES of all sizes, ONE 55 GALLON DRUM with liquid in it, made of metal. Also pallets at Nimitz Beach...surf boards, cans, etc. And who will clean all this up??? Will big waves arrive to take it all back to the ocean..AGAIN???
NOTE: Finding the 55 gallon drum was scarey. And we thought, who do we call for this one? Also one should never touch the barrel, in case there is TOXIC WASTE in it and thus being contaminated, where one would have to be treated, not a pleasant experience. I called Dera, Base Police, then I called DOCARE. And the officer came, NOT WHILE WE WERE THERE, We got tired of waiting. But he did call me for directions to it. And some how the coast guard contacted me and asked lots of questions, asking me to call the NATIONAL RESPONSE, who then asked more questions. In the end, the barrel would be hauled away from the area. A volunteer, should have these numbers handy...WHO DO YOU CALL??? And when reporting it in, you better know the color, size, if there is a label on it, NEVER TOUCH IT, take photos. In my second observation...I did see numbers on the barrel, and there were words on the bottom of the rim area...US 18 55 MYLR or something...it was hard to read for me. Sad part, due to the flooding, Waimanalo Gulch, drained into the ocean..TOXIC WASTE flowed out..At Kahe Point, needles, blood viles, and other medical waste was found on shore. OH MY GOD!!! This is a massive job for us to handle...I hope the proper authorities takes care of this one. I wonder, did the seals know to leave the area???? I mean, they all left. There's no one out there. None that we could find...and that is a blessing. We thought, White Plains would be spared, it wasnt...Nimitz was terrible, including windsock. Some beaches had no signs...THEY SHOULD HAVE HAD THEM SIGNS OUT. It was over whelming to see...I only hope our seals, will stay away from all of this MESS...god help em all. We were tired of searching, we missed Kahe pt. and Ewa beach areas...I wonder if they were spared or was it also a mess of rubble.

good point Barbara...
we should come up with a phone list of who to call in some of these situations, since volunteers are out there and may encounter this....

Will look into it and see what we can come up with. Thank you for your insight and braving the crap out there.
