Aloha good people
Only one critter sent in tonight. RH32 Kaale was foraging in the outfall stealing fish now and then. One guy was not happy with him and cussing at him each time he went by. Kaale was observed for about an hour and not letting up.
I guess the shutdown didn't affect this critter, although I don't think there have been as many fishermen out there.

As a retired school teacher, I feel that the school kids took the time to research with the help of Hawaiian practitioners to name PO4 as Ikaika. I suggest we honor their commitment to the seals by calling the seal by the name they gave it with its full meaning intact. These kids represent the future of how we deal with the seals. Why turn them off by putting in print on the blog a different name than what they gave it? Is "Ikaika" really so hard to say?
Aloha Karen,
Thank you for your comment, I do appreciate your input. First let me say I have always been a big supporter of the kids getting involved and early on we realized they had more of an impact on how the public viewed the seals. Also back in the day I actually went out to some of the schools and do presentations it for sure was rewarding.
As far as the names.... I was not aware any names have been given to any of the new pups, as they have not been tagged and some we don't even know the gender yet.
Also over the years the name game becomes somewhat emotional, as there are people who spend many many hours with a particular animal and feel an attachment to a name. I try to be respectful to all.
In the end I will do my best to honor whatever name is chosen for a seal, but if no one informs me it's hard for me to know.
If there was an effort to involve the community I would hope someone would include me and all folks that look after the seals, as they are big part of the seal community.
Sincerely... da blog lady Donna
