4/28/2018 Monk Seal Dailies: (part 2) Lesley's Ka'ena Point Update

It  was an early start out to the point and there was a nip in the wind.
We started off looking for RN58 "Luana" but she hadn't haul out...yet.
Just as we entered the NARS we saw a seal in an unusual place, the only seal seen previously there was little "Holokai". Out seal was R3CU how finally made it out of the Main Pol after several days in the same spot.

At the point we found RR70 "RIP" hauled out on the top sand part of Back Beach. He decided to move down to the waterline just as we arrived. I love to see them galumph sliding their way down those beaches. We sat down for a short while and soon spotted a seal coming from far out to the side of Main Beach then make it's way to Back Beach and started interacting with RR70 "RIP" who entered the water as soon as the seal arrived. He was gentle and the seal was a pest. We could see it was a phat (as DB would say) female.
They swam off together and we started a hunton our cameras till we found a pic of a tag. The girl was RL42 !
Sometime after while doing outreach I heard a bark looked back and there they were hauling out on some reefs.
The tide started coming up and the big swell rolled in at the same time. We headed back to look for RN58 "Luana" and saw a head swimming in. It took her a while but she hauled out and went to sleep.
I had to head back to the point with Jaime. We met our new volunteer and walked around the NARS with her.
The tide was very high by then and the sets were covering Ka'ena's Pool, the Runway, the Main Pool it looked like a Winter swell. The seals had been washed off the reefs and left
I received a txt saying that 2 seals had showed up on the beach by RN58 "Luana" and shortly after all had swam off.
A couple of hours later I made it back to retrieve the signs and there she was, hauled out sleeping peacefully.     More tomorrow πŸŒΊ
